I'm Murray all the way. I think he crumbles under the pressure though and will lose this. It took him a long time to settle into his last match and I think a slightly better player would of dealt with him, would definitely of got a 2 set lead. It just seems the bigger the game the worse Murray gets, shame because he's defiantly got the talent.

He will beat Tsonga but whomever he meets in the final will take him to school.

I think he's good enough to win the thing. He cannot let the opponent, crowd and media get to him like it clearly has.
He'd definitely have a good go at Roger.

I wouldn't be to confident about either of those. If he gets to the final it would be great if he got the Fed because at least he could look him in the eye ad know he should beat him.

What's your take on him then, I just think it's a pressure thing. He's great once he's in to his stride but he seems to take a set or two to get there in big games. Can't do that against the big boys.

I don't think they do. Tennis has a low profile in the uk that's totally focused on Wimbledon and then distilled down into a frenzy (dunno why) on the bored as TMAB and the Irish do their annual British/Scottish frothathon.

Out in the real world I don't think I've ever noticed him receive any more or less praise or abuse than anyone else. He's not a "character" but then how many elite sportsmen are these days?

Really?

Every GS the haters comes out - TBF he has a face you want to punch, but the vitriol towards him is bizarre.

They even seem to hate him because of his mother, which probably hints at their own mummy issues.

I like him and he made the mistake of being a bit too honest in his younger years when he had that dig at England, the precious englanders have never forgetten and just love to get stuck into him.

If he starts strong he should have more than enough to beat Jo but Jo is one of those players that when he is on fire he is almost unplayable, he knocked out Fed last year (I think) so he is certainly no muppet i just think Murray is better.

Murray has not had an easy run to the semis either and his win against Ferrer was class as Ferrer was the form player on tour so far this year.

With any luck Djok and Fed will play out a mammoth 5 setter and near kill each other with Fed sneaking out on top, Jo will decide not to turn up and let MUrray cruise through in straight sets....

Outside the frenzied world of the board where everyone is either amazing or shit I don't think I've ever noticed strong feelings. Funnily enough I'm going to a lads birthday party tonight and every year for the last about 4 years his birthday has had to take in the fact that half the pub is watching a Murray match on telly. No doubt they all claim him as British too the bastards

Hey - leave us out of this. Murray hatred is an English phenomenon.

FWIW I think that he'll either lose in 3 or win in 4 today. Then he will get murdered in the final - the men's hierarchy is now so set in stone: Djoko/Nadal > Fed >>>>>>> Murray/Tsonga/Ferrer/1 or 2 others >>>>>>>>>>> everybody else.

I didn't say you hated him. Besides, Bono and Bob Geldof love him and they are English

Head to head it's 8-7 to Murray but in slams it's 2-0 to The Fed and both straight sets. The good thing in Murrays favour as Ferrer put it after their match "in the big points he was aggressive". In the big games when the pressure is on Murray tends to go all passive. Maybe times are changing.

DAC - do you still have a bored bet running with respect to Murray winning a GS, or am I thinking of something/one else?

Group of us meeting up in the pub to watch this, be fanfuckingtastic to have a Brit in the final.

I've had £20 on Tsonga @ 2/1 for emotional insurance.

Oh dear a sweatie getting all precious about some long forgotten slight from another sweatie to the English. You must remember it's the sweaties with the complex who hang on to these things not the English. Those days are past now and in the past they will remain. For the English anyway.

Not true. I don't know any English person who doesn't want him to win. He "joked" about wanting England to lose at football and should expect a bit of ribbing back.

He's an odd-looking cove though.

Yeah, I was thinking this. I find tennis players i've seem to balance on the edge of exceptional for a while, I remember it with Federer when I was a kid, Nadal to a lesser extent because he was so young, Djokovic is the best example of this I can think of, suddenly they just get the job done. This is why I still believe Murray will win slams sooner or later.

One of the top hits on google
http://www.facebook.com/pages/Andy-Murr ... 6380894446

But it was more the mainstream press like on 5live this morning, the anti-Murray camp are pretty pathetic. It is not about wanting their favourite to win, they just want Murray to lose.

the sudden upsurge in form with Djokovic did coincide with a change of diet. Before that he did quite often look like he was about to die on court.

That he did and it was in response to Henman having a dig at Scotland not being at the finals, good natured banter but to claim he is not a divisive figure is just silly, see the number of threads about him alone and the oh so funny is he British/Scottish.

Yeah, Sam* et al are right, the Murray British/Scottish thing is just a running bored joke that gets used by the more witless trolls for, well, witless trolling. There are probably one or two retarded English posters who profess to dislike Murray too, but hey ho.

In the real world, I've never encountered too much dislike, and if I have it certainly isn't based along nationalistic lines. Don't forget that Tiger Tim himself was by no means universally popular - the gusset-moistening around Wimbledon gets up plenty of noses and he was hardly the most charismatic individual, or as good as Murray. So it's not like there is even that strong a bandwagonning tendency around tennis anyway, when it comes to the wider English populace.

That said, if Murray wins Wimbledon, he will rightly become a hugely popular, significant figure throughout Britain, as Tiger would have done before him had he won it**.

*[/Reacharound]

**Apart from in Jockland of course, where the miserable sods would probably have just cursed him as a chinless Sassenach

Murray is in the semi final. There does not seem to be anyone on this thread saying they hate him. If he gets to the final there will almost certainly be at least twice as many people in England watching him play who want him to win than there are people living in Scotland.

i want Murray to win, because he's British (yes, British, in the same way Henman was British... was Henman ever described as English?)

He plays great tennis, when his heads in the right place, but he makes it hard for people to like him.

I don't mind him being dour, but what I don't get is how quickly he gets down on himself in such a short space of time when a couple of points go against him, and before you know it he's rubbing his leg, stretching his back, almost looking for an injury to kick in.

with the amount of money he's made, can he not get a sports psychologist in to srto this side of his personality out?

but I think he'll struggle in the final, whoever he plays.

Like Henman, he's just not quite good enough to beat the best of the players around him, but given he's ranked 4th, making the semi 4 years going means he plays to his best every year. Unfortunately, so do those ranked above him :?

Could the sweaties really say they would be as enthusiastic about an Englishman in this position as the English are about a Scotsman.

But apparently, that is a reason to look down on us. Such is the Sweatie psyche.

I forgive them though.

Could the sweaties really say they would be as enthusiastic about an Englishman in this position as the English are about a Scotsman.

Depends on the Englishman tbh, I like Button for example but have no affinity towards Hamilton.

I wanted Robson to do well and the other girlies but they are all clearly on the wrong roids for wifies game as they just get blown away.

Not true. I don't know any English person who doesn't want him to win. He "joked" about wanting England to lose at football and should expect a bit of ribbing back.

He's an odd-looking cove though.

That he did and it was in response to Henman having a dig at Scotland not being at the finals, good natured banter but to claim he is not a divisive figure is just silly, see the number of threads about him alone and the oh so funny is he British/Scottish.

Normally created by antipodean idiots and people like dozy you precious dolt.

Pony up some evidence then sunshine.

Murray is in the semi final. There does not seem to be anyone on this thread saying they hate him. If he gets to the final there will almost certainly be at least twice as many people in England watching him play who want him to win than there are people living in Scotland.

But apparently, that is a reason to look down on us. Such is the Sweatie psyche.

I forgive them though.
