The talk has been how much better Wales will be for a run, but IMO the Wobs will gain a lot this week. They'll finally have a contact training session and actually plan moves and tactics specifically for the Welsh. This'll be the first time this summer we see the true A team. I'd go with:

1. Robinson
2. Moore
3. Kepu or Slipper - both didn't scrummage that well but Palmer really doesn't offer too much else. Tough one. Probably Kepu I guess.
4. Sharpe
5. Simmons
6. Higgers
7. Lord Pocock
8. Palu
9. Genia
10. Barnes
11. Ioane
12. McCabe
13. Faingaa or Horne - either would be OK without setting the world on fire. Horne really shouldn't have butchered that try though
14. Morahan - Vuna was shit in perfect conditions. Morahan was shit is diabolical conditions - Morahan has to get the benefit of the doubt here.
15. AAC

Yeah Morahan or Shipperly for Vuna. Vuna shouldn't play another Wallaby game, he was shite.

Kepu seems to be the main injury concern for the Wallabies. Tough news if he is ruled out.

Palmer would likely be called up as the THP. If this is the case then it's happening a lot faster for him than I'd have thought, but he'd do a good job.

Kepu in doubt for Wallabies second Test

WALLABIES prop Sekope Kepu is in doubt for the second Test against Wales after injuring his hand in Saturday night's 27-19 series-opening victory at Suncorp Stadium.

Kepu played all 80 minutes in the three-tries-to-one victory over the Six Nations champions but was sent for scans on Sunday morning which will determine his availability for the Melbourne clash.

The NSW tight-head produced a strong display as the Australian scrum held firm against the highly-rated Welsh pack and would be a loss for the Wallabies.

But coach Robbie Deans has the luxury of calling on in-form Brumbies prop Dan Palmer who enjoyed a fine debut against Scotland on Tuesday night.

There was good news on the injury front for the Tri-Nations champions with Digby Ioane and Tatafu Polota-Nau cleared after copping heavy second-half knocks as the home side built up a 20-6 lead before the tourists closed to within a point with 17 minutes to play.

Dom Shipperley and Bernard Foley have rejoined Australia's 30-man squad, with Luke Morahan and Kane Douglas stepping out, while Deans said Kurtley Beale remains some chance of returning from a shoulder injury at Etihad Stadium.

Read more: show
Relieved Deans has predicted a brilliant three-match series which could go down to the wire after an enthralling 27-19 triumph over Wales on Saturday night.

Australia bounced back emphatically from their disastrous 9-6 upset loss to Scotland on Tuesday night in Newcastle by clicking into gear to unlock the strong Welsh defence at Suncorp Stadium.

But despite their three-tries-to-one triumph, to continue the tourists' 43-year drought Down Under, the Wallabies only escaped after withstanding a spirited second-half comeback by the tourists.

Down 20-6 with half an hour to play, the Red Dragons fired and Australia's defence tired as they hit back to close the gap to one point with 17 minutes left.

Wales could have hit the lead if not for five-eighth Rhys Priestland uncharacteristically bombing a certain try by dropping a high pass with a three-man overlap outside him, while they also fumbled at other crucial times.

"We just didn't take those opportunities in the second half," Welsh coach Rob Howley lamented.

"We probably left two or three tries out on the park to be honest."

In the end, man of the match Will Genia sent centre Pat McCabe, running a brilliant angle, over for the match-clincher.

Deans admitted he was nervous when the ultra-fit Six Nations champions stormed back and expects them to keep coming in the second Test in Melbourne.

Wales must turnaround their poor record in Australia on Saturday night under the Etihad Stadium roof to keep the series alive but both teams know there is little between them.

"It's do or die next week," Deans said.

"It will be another dry ball so I imagine it will be edge of the seat stuff which will good.

"They (Wales) are a fit side, it's going to be a great series, for sure."

Deans praised under-pressure playmaker Berrick Barnes who produced a fine all-round game and showed good vision to help orchestrate his first win in eight matches.

But it was Genia who was the stand-out, highlighted by a solo 35m try after halftime where he split two tight-forwards and then stepped around fullback James Hook to score.

"The credit has to go to the guys up front; they won us quick ball," the halfback said.

"The wingers worked off the edges ... so I was lucky because the other guys just made my job so much easier."

Wales have winger George North (deep cork) in some doubt for the second Test while centre Scott Williams suffered from a head clash.

Shipperley and Foley added to the Wallabies 30-man squad. Which begs the question: Who is in this 30-man squad?

Presumably the 22 from Saturday plus Palmer, Shipperley and Foley, but who are the other five?

Is Cadeyrn Neville still in the squad?

Have Slipper and Lucas been released and made available to play for the Reds against the Hurricanes? They could probably do with a game.

[img]ROBBIE DEANS, who admitted he had just endured the most challenging week of his coaching career, has not given up hope of his errant No.10 Kurtley Beale being available for the Second Test against Wales in Melbourne on Saturday night.

And Deans will call in Brumbies and Springboks World Cup-winning coach Jake White this week to observe training.

The Wallabies coach, whose position was under serious threat after Australia were downed by Scotland in Newcastle last Tuesday night, was more buoyant yesterday after his team rallied to defeat the Six Nations grand slam champions in the opening international of three in Brisbane.
Advertisement: Story continues below

The past week has been tricky for Deans, having to prepare a Test team twice in five days in two different cities. When asked yesterday if this had been one of the most challenging weeks of his coaching career, Deans replied: ''The … [most challenging].''

Was this because of the demands, or the personal pressure?

''Just the demands. Personal pressure is identical week to week. It never varies,'' he said.

While Deans will reward the team that won at Suncorp Stadium by picking virtually the same contingent for Melbourne, there is a chance Beale could move to the bench. The only possible change in the starting XV is tight-head prop Dan Palmer moving in for Sekope Kepu, who has a strained forearm.

Whether Beale is available will be determined by two factors - if he can convince the selectors he has overcome his shoulder complaint and whether he will have to front an Australian Rugby Union code of conduct disciplinary hearing this week.

The ARU is investigating an incident involving Beale and Quade Cooper at Brisbane's Victory Hotel in the early hours of Friday morning where police were called. It was last night awaiting a report from Queensland Police, who attended the scene. No charges were laid.

However, on the rugby side, Deans believes Beale is close to a return.

''He's rehabbing hard and there is a chance he may be available,'' he said.

''But don't get too excited by it, because he hasn't received the green light. Talking to Kurtley, he's feeling good. The discomfort has gone and the critical issue now is strength. The medical staff will want him to be back to full strength, before he re-enters.''

One should not expect Beale to go straight back in at the expense of Berrick Barnes. Deans showed faith in Barnes after a lacklustre performance against Scotland and recent struggles with the Waratahs. Admittedly, he did not have too many other options as James O'Connor, Cooper and Beale were all unavailable through injury, but Barnes rewarded his coach with a high-quality performance.

On a dry track, Barnes was far more composed, combining well with man of the match Will Genia. Barnes also showed he can actually kick field goals.

''I have no doubt he would have enjoyed that, because he's a bloke who has taken a lot of heat, and scrutiny,'' Deans said. ''But … he's a tough kid. He kept coming on, and kept offering. He didn't back off. It's a great sign. And we will reward the group that accepted the challenge.''

That means a consistent Test line-up for a change - a luxury for Deans after he had to revamp his team for Scotland and then Wales.

While Wales head to Canberra for tomorrow night's match against the Brumbies, Deans is adamant the tourists will improve in Melbourne.

After the Brumbies match, their coach, White, will travel to Melbourne and attend an Australian training session. In recent weeks, he has provided assistance to Deans.

I suspect it will be the same team, barring injury.

And rightly so.

The team had very little time to preapre for the Brisbane test and came through with a strong win.

They need to be given a chance to prepare together properly for them to truly shine.

The only reason you would change, other than someone being injured is if a freak became available (e.g. Beale).

Shipperley et al does not fall into that category.

Haven't seen anything about Mike Phillips being cited for the scuffle at the end on the weekend (not that I have looked hard).

Could be a case of no news is good news from his POV.

It all comes down to the set piece and the breakdown for these two sides. You hassle Australia at the breakdown and get on top, then you control Will and the Australian backs are taken out of the game.

Don't control Australia at the breakdown, then Will runs riot.

Wales will put more men into the ruck this time I reckon.

Should be a completely different game.

(not sure if their whole defensive system and game plan will not go tits up if they do though as shewerly they would have changed it on the pitch during the game last time out).

It is freezing. I got up this morning and my windscreen had a layer of ice over it. That has never happened to me before.
It is bloody cold, approaching zero overnight, and barely making double digits during the day.

I'm really looking forward to this test. I was dreading the last one. I thought we were goners. Now both teams have had a hit-out and will be the better for it.

I hope Priestland keeps dropping the ball.

It could happen. The Wallabies under Deans have always lacked consistency and a good win always seems to be followed by a poor performance. Bar a couple of dropped balls, the last game could have turned out very differently.

I'll just be happy if we manage to play the full 80 this time.
