Are you sure?

I knew the Chippy in Stonehaven who claim to have invented them.

Delia Smith invented them in early 70s.

I'd be quite interested to see the provenance of that.

Or have I been whooshed? :?

My vote is for these guys:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kHXsybAvaxo
The Haemorrhoids with their 1981 classic 'How Can I Love You (If You Won't Take Of Your Pants).'
They are still gigging; I saw them in January where they did a few of their classics - Pink Vibrator, Open Your Barn Doors, and Shitehouse Blues.
They are Lanarkshire lads which explains a lot, but they put on a good show.

The Proclaimers 8) :smug:

Awesome live, just such catchy, witty, and recognisable songs.

Who else could fit 'Saskatchewan' into a song about Scottish politics and make it sound amazing? I'll tell you - no one

A mate has just laid down the drums for the latest Bob Scott album. Borrowed my old kit for some practice so I'm getting an undeserved album thank you. Weird.

So am I.

Not because she deserves to be but because there has been some incredible shite already mentioned on this thread.....Deacon Blue FOR FUCKS SAKE.....Runrig anyone? :(

There have however been a number of brilliant Scottish bands - certainly more that there have been Welsh ones at least and probably Irish ones too. I quite like the fey indie of Belle and Sebastian, the cartoonish acid stompers The Shamen, the sepulchral shards of majesty that was The Cocteau Twins, the (maybe this was just me) the lovely Shop Assistants/Motorcycle Boy or even Easterhouse who I really liked for a few weeks in the mid-80s......but my favourite has to be the Fannies....if only for the splendour of Bandwagonesque as I wasn't even that hot on their later stuff.

FUCK FUCK FUCK QUICK EDIT

How the fuck could I have forgotten JAMC.........better than Teenage Fanclub by about 1,000,000 times.

... were from Manchester - they just liked the sound of the name.

Cocteau Twins

daylight

The Delgados/Camera Obscura
Belle & Sebastian/Associates/Orange Juice

Runrig are fucking brutal
Primal Scream are mostly English apart from Bobby Gillespie (and he's a cunt)

Calum MacDonald, who writes most of the lyrics for Runrig, was a PE student who did some work experience at the High School I attended. Great bloke and taught rugby rather than football where possible, which was a pleasant change.
Have seen Runrig live twice, not recently though- both were brilliant gigs.

Scots have produced a lot of great bands. I'll take the question to include bands that are no more.

However, are we using "Scottish" as a noun or an adjective?

2 bands who were great and encapsulated Scottishness (err... not the Proclaimers) = The Skids and subsequently Big Country. Both carved out unique sounds which represented the country of their birth.

Being great and Scottish
- Simple Minds. Early days. U2? Pah. Not fit musically or innovatively to wipe Kerr's shoes in the days of Life, Empires, Sons and even the over produced New Gold.
- Cocteau Twins. Unique. Probably the flagship for 4AD which is no mean feat.
- Associates. Short lived and another tragic death to go with Adamson's but MacKenzie's voice was a thing of rare and individual beauty. MacKenzie's contribution to Yello's Rhythm Divine. 8)
- Jesus and Mary Chain. The Reids might have been the most annoying ****ers ever when it came to live performances which left everyone short changed but they were musically significant and different enough to warrant mention. PWEI's pisstake "What's so f***ing good about Candy" might have diminished their status a bit!

More mainstreams would include Waterboys and Eurythmics.

I'll chuck this in (not read the thread) because someone will have said Ultravox. Not valid because the real Ultravox was John Foxx's and he was most certainly not a Midget (Ure) Scot.

Gregory's Girl was on the other night.

Annoyingly it's not on youtube but she used to have this spastic dance routine like Dick Van Dyke as the "toy" clown in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. When doing this on BBC's Swap Shop, she got clouted in the head by her bass player and knocked out.

Rumour has it that Noel Edmonds violated her repeatedly whilst our Clare was off with the fairies. Several years later, Edmonds bumped off Michael Lush who threatened to expose his evil deeds.

Saw the Skids in Edinburgh in the Student Union. Some twat (well it was the student union) threw beer over the them. The whole band left the stage as one and kicked the shit out of him. Then got back up and played 'Into the Valley'. This was the first time I'd heard it and they were raging. Sensational.

Skids and Big Country share members.

TBH I'd take the fucking Proclaimers (let alone Texas) over the bland shite you listed Muse. ;)

Capercallie or Runrig?
SAHAB, Nazareth, Incredible String Band, Average White Band, Jesus And Mary Chain, Blue Nile, Cocteau Twins, Big Country, Simple Minds, Altered Images, Aztec Camera, Orange Juice, Deacon Blue, Belle and Sebastian, Camera Obscura.

Capercaillie from way back when we were all much younger. Karen Mathieson has one of the great voices. Saw her singing with Eddi Reader a few years back. Two voices made in heaven that joined perfectly.

They might be hibbee cunts but they have produced some brilliant songs throughout the years - there is nothing like 300 folk singing 500 miles in a boozer on Hogmanay.
