BLUES BEAT URUGUAY IN FINAL TOUR MATCH

Sunday, May 13, 2012 - Submitted by Garth Gottfried
The Ontario Blues have defeated the Uruguayan national team 27-16. Known as 'Los Teros,' Uruguay hosted the Blues in Montevideo, on Sunday May 13. It was Ontario's third and final game on their South American tour.

Playing at the Montevideo Cricket Club, which is one of the oldest rugby clubs in the world, and the oldest in South America, Los Teros scored an early penalty for the first lead, 3-0.

Ontario soon struck back from a lineout with Dan West running in from 25 metres out. Steve Piatek converted from the touchline for the Blues to take the lead 7-3.

Soon after Piatek landed a penalty for Ontario to increase the lead to 10-3 just 20 minutes into the game.

By the break, the home side landed another penalty goal to make it 10-6 for the Blues.

Very early in the second half, the Blues benefitted from a try by Ryan Macsween. Another Piatek conversion from the touchline stretched the lead to 17-6 for Ontario.

One more try wide out, this time by hooker Ray Barkwill, put the Blues well up at 24-6, in the 55th minute.

Uruguay increased the pressure, which was withstood by the Blues until the 64th minute. Tom Dolezel was sent to the sin-bin. Two minutes later, the same fate befell Mike Scholz and Ontario were down to 13 men.

Los Teros scored an uncoverted try to make it 24-11, but the Blues were able to score while shorthanded, Piatek slotting another penalty to make it 27-11.

With the first sin-bin over, the Blues were still vulnerable as Uruguay notched another unconverted try to make it 27-16, which was the final score.

[ed. comments below]

The Rock representing the East Coast of Canada are in Victoria for four games. They play the Maple Leafs today at Bear Mountain stadium, the Canada U20 team tomorrow at the same venue, CW on Wednesday at Windsor Park and James Bay on Friday evening at Royal Athletic Park. We'll provide match details as we get them.

Today's lineups are listed below. The Rock feature some names well known to BC rugby fans with Chauncey O'Toole back on the Island after playing for Bridgend in Wales last year. Toni Wodzicki played for the Vikes for a number of years and Mike Simpson was a standout scrum half with the Pacific Pride a number of years back (2004-). Jason Picco toured with the Rock last year and was a standout in the centres, I expected one of the BC teams to "draft" him for the Premier season but although he played in the Victoria 7s, he didn't stay around for the Premier season.

Today's game (and tomorrow's) are available online at sportscanada.tv Today's game starts at 2pm.

THE ROCK DEFEAT MAPLE LEAFS AT BEAR MOUNTAIN STADIUM

Sunday, May 13, 2012 - Submitted by RC Communications
It was a hot day as the Atlantic Rock and the Canadian Maple Leafs took the field at Bear Mountain stadium Sunday afternoon. The Atlantic Rock were playing the first of a four game trip to Vancouver Island.  Following today’s match The Rock face the National U20 team tomorrow night at 7pm at Bear Mountain Stadium.  This trip is in preparation of the start of the Canadian Rugby Championship (CRC) season.

The Rock started the game strong and opened the scoring at 1:26 into the first after Toni Wodzicki pounced on a loose ball to score the first try of the game.  Patrick Parfrey kicked as successful conversion from the far sideline putting The Rock up by seven.

The Maple Leafs was awarded a penalty after the Rock’s front row went down in the scrum.  Patrick Kay got The Maple Leafs on the board with a successful penalty kick.  The penalties continued as The Rock was awarded a penalty after the Maple Leafs.  The Rock decided to kick from just within the half way line.  Ciaran Hearn made the kick and The Rock took a 10-3 lead.

The Maple Leaf scored their first try at 17:10 in the first, after a great pass from Hubert Buydens who got the ball out wide to Sean Fergurson who managed to score in the corner.  The conversion was kicked off the post causing the Maple Leafs to trail the rock 10-8.

The Rock continued pressing as Ciaren Hearn found Chauncy O’Tool out wide. O’Tool taking advantage of the mismatch in speed was able to run the ball into the Maple Leafs end.  Patrick McNicholas made the conversion from out wide and The Rock increased their lead 17-8.

Patrick Kay kicked a high ball from deep in the Maple Leafs end and Sean Duke was able to make the catch before heading on a long run from 50m out putting the ball down between the post in the Rocks end.

The score at half time was 17 – 15 in favor of the Rock.  The heat on the field was taking its toll on players and hydration was a critical element.

The second half started with both teams battling hard as The Rock continued to demonstrate strong defensive organization.  However, at 9:44 into the second Sean Ferguson was able to break through scoring the first try of the half.  Patrick Kay was able to add the extra two points giving the Maple Leafs the first lead of the game at 22-17.

At 11:58, The Rock answered after a pass from Jason Picco went wide to Kyle Baillie who dove the ball into the corner scoring for The Rock while injuring himself on the play and tying the Game 22 – 22.

The Rock managed to take back the lead after Cieran Hearn made a run to the corner scoring at 18:41.   Patrick McNicholas made a beautiful kick from the sideline. The Rock led 29-22.  At 23:21 Grayden Bowd fed Michael Feualifau who made a great individual effort scoring a try.  Kay made the conversion tying the game 29-29.

With less than three minuets left in the game the Maple Leafs were called for being off their feet, Patrick McNicholas who had been consistent all day managed to pick up the extra three points, putting The Rock up 32-29.  The last few minutes of play found the Maple Leafs pressing hard in the Rocks end, however the strong defense by The Rock held strong. The final score was 32-39 in favor of the visiting team, The Rock from Newfoundland.

Maple leafs head coach Kieran Crowley was pleased with todays match, even though his squad didn’t come out on top.

“The physicality that the rock brought to the game was great for our boys” said Crowley “This was a good chance for some of our boys to be exposed to a style of rugby that is higher than what they are used to playing and this is what they will be facing if selected for the U20 squad”

The Rock will be playing again Monday night at 7pm as they take on the National U20 team at Bear Mountain Stadium.

DTH had a decent game at the weekend, the backs didn't play with much imagination apart from a couple of breaks, one by DTH where he failed to get the pass away to Hogg, if he had...... No point dwelling on it.

He was immense in defence though. He played the full 80, treated on field a couple of times but I reckon he'll be fit for Canada's summer schedule.

Sounds like he will be coming back to Canada soon, according to his twitter.

Hello, a question for you all:

if my friend wanted to get an internship in Rugby Canada, what would you guys tell him? Is there a remote chance of his application succeeding without having any connections?

My friend is currently doing a masters in sport organisations management.

What kind of accent does he have? Kiwi / Welsh / English / Irish = highly likely. ;)

Seriously, probably not very likely, especially if he'd be looking for a paid internship. I've also met a couple of people who've worked for them and who weren't impressed with the org. as employers.

The rock vs Canada U20 tonight.

Quote:
The Rock Vs Canada U20 Tonight at Bear Mountain Stadium: Rosters Included

The Rock fresh off their win over the Maple Leafs yesterday afternoon will send their second team into battle against the Canada U20s today. On Sunday afternoon the Rock defeated the Maple Leafs by a score of 32-29. It was the Rock's first team against a team comprised of Canada U20 players and senior carded players. It gave the Rock some pre-season competition while giving key U20 players some playing time at a higher level prior to the U20 World Trophy tournament in June. It was a good test for Pat Kay at #10, Andrew Crow at #8 and Mike Feualifau in the centres. Feualifau and Kay will be on the bench tonight for the U20's as they face the Rock's second team.

Canada U20 face off against the Americans in a tournament warmup match on May 26th and Mike Shelley will no doubt use this game to look at some team hopefuls for the national U20 squad. This is a chance for some players to make a statement for selection and with 10 of the 15 starters playing club rugby in BC, it's a chance for fans to support these young players.

The game starts at 7pm @ Bear Mountain Stadium.

Ticket Information:
• Youth (Under 12) $5.00 each
• Student (12-18) $10 Each
• Adult (19+) $15.00 Each

Apparently during last nights broadcast, Gareth Rees mentioned that Chauncey O'Toole is going to concentrate on 7s over the next year. I assume he would still probably be available for 15s test matches, but not look for employment in Europe anymore.

It was a good tour by them, and the team that lost to Chile was full of the young bucks.

The Rock are dominating possession and destroying the U20 boys at the rucks, not really a surprise there. Rock score another try soon to be 17 - 0. This is good training for the U20 boys to get ready for the Junior World challenge cup or whatever it is called.

Nice run by one of the wingers(I think) for the U20(I am getting no sound and couldn't see the number), but after a few broken tackles he throws a lose pass to someone else who immediately knocks on.

U20 boys get a penalty just inside the Rock's half, but they opt for the line out. and win it! But they knock on in a simple backline movement.

At least the U20 scrum is going better in this game, either that or the Rocks scrum sucks.

U20 boys get a 5 metre line out, win it, and then promptly lose the ball in a backline movement. The Rocks lock (5) gets the ball at his 5 metre line and out runs the entire U20 boys team the length of the pitch to score a try! Unfuckingbelievable!

Also, the U20s scrumhalf is huge, I swear he is bigger than their number 8.

The Rock string together a few phases and score in the corner.

27-7 for the Rock, 7 minutes into the 2nd half.

One criticisim about this feed, when there is a try, why the hell does the bar at the top of the TV screen say 'GOAL'?????

U20 boys trying to compete more at the breakdown, but are giving up the sides of the pitch. Rock swing it out wide and score, after the ref misses an obvious forward pass.

The Rock starting to dominate at the scrums now, we need to get Kurt Gibbons on, why is he still on the bench Mike Shelley?

U20 have a lineout near the 22 metre line of the Rock. The lineouts is one area where the U20s have doen well at today.

U20 subs are having a big impact in the final 20 minutes, 2 tries in 3 minutes.

34-21 with 10 minutes left.

Much better D from Canada's U20 boys. They are able to withstand a lot of pressure near their goal line.

34-21 with 5 minutes left.
