Generally yes. Using something like Juice Defender will help though.

Have an upgrade coming in around 4 weeks. Leaning towards the One-X but haven't entirely ruled out the GSIII.

Anyway, quick Android question. Music apps (just for playing MP3's off the phone). I have one (on a HTC Sensation XL) that's alright at best, not sure if it's the default Android one or a HTC replacement. I'd like to try a few others but the one I have integrates with the lock screen so I can skip track without unlocking the phone which is very handy. Anyone know of nice downloadable music apps that do the same?

I have cloudskipper on mine. Has that same feature where it allows you to skip tracks or pause it etc without unlocking the phone. Has built in equaliser and other nifty gadgets that I don't use. Just do a search and it'll come up - pic of a red plane is the icon. Free.

This is probably not strictly the correct thread but I didn't want to make another...; I was given an LG Optimus 2X (or an LG Optimus P990) with ICS and told that my sim (2degrees a NZ Cell phone network) would slip in and start working straight away. It calls and texts as per normal but I cannot access the internet or get any data through the network like I could on my other phone, a Motorola Defy.

Any suggestions? I've fiddled around with the APN etc.

Take it back and get them to try it in one of their phones. It should work straight away but could be a setting on the phone like; don't connect to internet unless wireless network present, or something similar. I know that is one option on mine.

You might have to change some of the network settings to get on to the data network. Probably best to ask someone who's familiar with your local network service provider or just go and ask them yourself.

Is there any way of recording a telephone conversation on my Android? Some idiot has decided to arrange a call during the next Bank Holiday when it is a hassle to travel to the office/arrange for the room with the recording equipment to be open.

Would rather just take the call at home, but the conversation will need minuting eventually.

Do phones have or is there an app with such a function?

Thought I'd add another useful app to the pile. Recently discovered Swiss Army Knife which includes a flashlight, ruler, timer, stopwatch, compass, bubble level, calculator, and magnifying glass all in one convenient app.

Very handy to consolidate all those features. I don't use them every day, but they're great to have when you do need them.

I'd always leave it on, wifi uses less juice than data does so if you've a choice between the two, wifi wins.

Also, leaving it on uses less juice than manually turning it on and off or the auto 'turn on when screen on' option.

EDIT: Also, don't bother with Juice Defender or any other task manager, they use up more battery than they save.

The free version of Juice Defender definitely extends battery life.

As far as I'm aware wifi uses more juice than cell data but not sure about this.

It utterly depends what way your phone deals with wifi and what settings you have enabled.

Was waiting to see if Samsung would up the build quality on the GS3 and they haven't so I put the order in the the One X today.

I would have rather had the bigger battery and micro-sd expandability, but I don't want a shitty plastic phone.

I have the S2 and I've used a casemate case since the beginning - it has a hard outer case and a silicon inner case - and holding an S2 not in said case is weird. It's a fucking tank inside it.

Gizmodo are usually fanbois but in this head to head Android comes out clear winner.

I am staggered iOS 6 is still not going to have widgets

Orange rang me on Friday offering more minutes, same texts and data for £4 less a month, and a HTC One S with no upfront charge. Had played with the One X as my brother has one, and it's lovely, but didn't want to pay more a month so decision made. Arrived yesterday, and it's very nice. Very solid, although I am being cautious with the reports of the black oxide coating scratching off. Very fast in comparison with the old Galaxy S i9000, and makes that phone feel very flimsy and dated.

It's going back. I'm careful with phones, and have even bought a case for it, but the rate of scratching means it will look tatty in a few months and the chip on top is not good. Had it just over a week, haven't dropped it or been careless.

The grey is nowhere near as attractive, but it's still an option. Or, the Sony Xperia S is an option, but no ICS yet. Any thoughts?

That's shite. I had one HTC with a bit of a scratching/discolouration problem (Desire S), all the others have generally been fine. You're right to send it back if it is going after a week, that's absurdly bad quality. They were banging on something terrible about the finish of those too, some micro-arc oxidation ceramic-type sci-fi shite. Obviously didn't work! Just seen the black, not seen a grey one.

I don't like any of the Experias I have seen but I am a good bit out of date so they might be a lot better. Ones I saw had weird design, plasticky build and an awful Android skin.

Whatever you get I'd make sure it the manufacturer has at least committed to upgrading to ICS if they haven't actually done the upgrade.

I'm in the frame for an upgrade and will likely get the One-X in black (the white one picks up colour from jeans), what about that or a GSIII, Galazy Nexus or GSII?

Orange won't take it back, they don't see it as a fault. So they put me through to HTC who are going to collect it tomorrow "for repair".

Unless they take it apart and have another crack at this micro-arc oxidation business, then I can't see a repair being possible.

You know, I should just fucking return it to Orange under the cooling off period, wonder if they'd take it back now I've reported it as damaged.

Is there an App where you can place the phone in the middle of a meeting and it scribes all that is said into a document automatically?

You could try the cooling off period. The other possibility is that it was a quality issue in an early batch and they will just give you one from a better batch after looking at it.

I have a mate with one, as I said it was fine when I saw it, he would be ultra careful with stuff though. Will ask him if he has had any issues since (he prob has it about 5 weeks now).

When I had issues with the Desire S the main probs were flaking paint and shite wifi reception. After establishing that these were both inherent issues with that model I got them to give me a Sensation. I'm currently dealing with HTC on behalf of a mate and their customer service is a lot worse than it used to be though.

Got the new Samsung S3 this week on contract, absolutely cracking phone, however, this may seem like a small problem, but I'm unable to add new words when writing a text, it's proving to be a right pain in the arse. Can't add them without going into a weird setting that deletes the words every time the phone is switched off, very f*cking annoying it is.

If you haven't tried Swype I'd advise it, think it actually comes preinstalled on the GSIII.

Are you talking about Swype or the Samsung kb?

To add a word to Swype just type it in the normal non-Swype way and then tap to add to dictionary after you've already tapped to accept word.

Samsung KB has a swipe thing built in, but in the options there isn't a Swype KB to select. It also chooses to be predictive on some things (texts) and not for searching Google or the Play shop. Very annoying, and very little online dealing with this.

A mate got the SIII, was having a look at it last night and it's a gorgeous phone (from the five minutes I spent messing with it). I've gotta say though, I do prefer the interface in the Galaxy Nexus (i.e. pure ICS) but the SIII handset is nicer to hold and also obviously has a far better camera.

If you're that paranoid get rid of your phone or at least don't have a smartphone.

For me the screen and build quality of the One-X are both superior, the screen very noticeably so (had them side by side yesterday). The Samsung Android is improving but worse than the HTC version although I'd definitely prefer plain to both at this stage.

On the plus side for the Samsung it is slightly more powerful and has SD expansion I believe.

I never understood the camera that was put on the Galaxy Nexus, seems like a deliberate downgrade by Samsung. I used to not give a shit about cameras on phones but since they hit about 8MP and got much faster I now use the phone much like I used to use a compact occasionally. Worth taking out of the pocket to snap something interesting/funny. If the GN had a better camera and screen it would be a much better phone.

Nice-looking Android UI overlay from Frog Design going onto Android phones from Sharp. See vid at bottom of piece.

Leaked details of Google Nexus tablet, all as per predictions.

7" 1280*720 screen, Tegra 3 quad core proc 1GB RAM. Pricing very keen, USD $199 for 8GB and $249 for 16. Running Jelly Bean, next version of Android which is very similar to ICS I believe.

Basically it's a better Kindle Fire without the limitations at the same price.

If it has an SD card slot I may well pick one of these up to save toting laptop when I only need it for email/surfing and for watching TV/movies in bed.

Yep, so long as it has sd storage, the 8GB one for £159/169 would be perfect.

I've been looking around and can't find any info, I'm guessing it won't :((

I'd probably still do the 16GB one for €249, remains to be seen what the euro pricing will be though.

@Jerpy, that's a great deal for a GN.
