Adam Yauch, who performed under the stage name MCA, is dead after losing a long battle with cancer, according to reports from Global Grind and TMZ.

The 47-year-old member of the Beastie Boys announced he would be receiving treatment for a cancerous tumor in his salivary gland in July 2009, and that that as a result the group would cancel some future shows and push back the release of a new album.

In 2011 it had been reported that Yauch had beaten the disease, but reports were sadly exaggerated. On the band's website he wrote:

"Hello My Friends While I’m grateful for all the positive energy people are sending my way, reports of my being totally cancer free are exaggerated. I’m continuing treatment, staying optimistic and hoping to be cancer free in the near future."

Most recently, it appeared Yauch's health had taken a turn for the worst when it was announced that he was unable to attend the Beastie Boys' induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland on March 14.

Yauch, along with Michael "Mike D" Diamond, and Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz started the Beastie Boys in 1979 and have since released eight albums together. On Saturday, May 5, HBO will air the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ceremony honoring the group, who just became the third rap group to enter the Hall, after Run-D.M.C. (2009) and Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five (2007).

I was going to say RIP but he believed in reincarnation so maybe KIM (Keep It Moving) would be more appropriate. :)

Adam Yauch and the Beastie Boys helped me get through a very turbulent adolescence and I'll be forever grateful to them for that.

Ill Communication was released just about when I was becoming a man about town and many a night was had forcing them on unwilling listeners- I was a bit of a dj back then and the dancy lads expected something else at 3am. Beastie Boys were great lads altogether.

I still remember pooling our lunch money together in 7th grade to buy Licensed to Ill then pooling all our lunch money to buy some Brass Monkey  Cutting school to see Krush Groove
The soundtrack of puberty for me. Thanks for the good times MCA.

Easily my favourite album of all time. I'd be driving from skate park to skate park with a car full of mates, screaming every song at the top of our voice. Fuck cancer. You cunt of a disease.

Manadatory GOOOOOOOOOONNNEEEEEE rule not followed

mandatory FHHD

now, as for the op, I didn't even know he had cancer. I have chosen to be out of the entertainment news loop (for life) so I missed his battle. May he have peace in the afterlife.

The Beasties were definitely ground breakers. And, then they decided to play the music, instead of just rap.

Hard to say he will be missed, he had gone into the background. Not that he hadn't kept busy, just not in the public eye as much.

Still, sad news, especially as they had just been inducted into the R & R Hall of Fame (or piss-stain, depending on your point of view). Didn't know much about him personally, but I would think that it's still nice to know you had achieved some level of respect from your peers.
