Aye, this one is a real kicker. Although, I think I'm more depressed about how it mirrors my own passing years than anything else. It's starting to look like I may never make it as a pro player.

I know what you mean Zappa, if Wally cant make it forever what hope do I have. Like Im benching a whole 10kg and running the 100 in 23.67.

Just so hard to make it nowadays.

James Coughlan wouldn't lower himself to that, he would take ALL your scarves, wipe his arse with them and rob your Nazi Gold. And use to it buy tape to put on his head, so to make himself appear even more warrior like.

David Wallace‏@wa22y

Thanks to everyone for all your support down through the years. It's been a great time in my life and I'm looking forward to the future.

WTF is an autist?

Describing someone as an Ireland & Lions ligind suggests the poster thought he was both.

It does. I fail to see how David Wallace can be rated as a Lions "ligind", unless that word has a special meaning that can also include other tourists who started two tests and was then selected as a sub or the third.

I guess he did manage to be selected for two tours though. That is pretty good.

It cannot be denied that he had a good career. Good player. Wish him well.

i remember that game and that try in particular, i think Wally was being kept out in the cold by Eddie O''Sullivan at the time but in that one try showed that the first tackler in was wasting their time, all they could hope for was to slow him down ; they were writing him off around 2007 with chonic ankle problems but kept showing up as being one of hte most powerful and speediest players around ; one of my favourite all time Munster and Ireland players and a gent also by all accounts ; good luck to the man

Yeah he had a run in with Eddie and after he came back from his injury (and he did struggle for form at first), Eddie stubbornly refused to pick him in squads, let alone the starting team.
Eventually, he got left with no option but to pick him for the TC game in 2004 and the rest is history.

I was lucky enough to play with him in college. He was an 8 back then and playing 7 in that backrow was the easiest job ever. He'd take the ball on, eventually about 8 people would jump on him and he'd pop the offload to me so I'd scoot over to get the glory.

Usually when you say 'the rest is history' that's the turning point after which all is rosy. e.g. 'D'Arcy moved to OC for Leinster, BOD was injured so he played there for Ireland, did so well that he was retained beside BOD against Wales and the rest is history'

Meanwhile Wallace was capped 3 times in 2 years after that TC match and didn't earn his place back proper until he had earned it by playing well for Munster. Something that is constantly ignored is that for a large portion of time between 02 and 06 Wallace was either in poor form or injured and Gleeson followed by JOC were deservedly picked ahead of him. Something at least he himself has admitted.

The only set of 3+ brothers to ever play for the Lions. Richie was a bit gash though. Paul is still the King

it must have been a pisser when the alarm clock subsequently woke you up?

Don't be so jealous. I'm very willing to hear your tale of the time you played on the side pitch while David Wallace played on the main pitch.

Depressing news. One of my favourite players of all time. Class act on and off the pitch.

Witty too. I'll never forget when my brother and I were in Thomond for a friendly and my brother went up to him and said:

"Give us an autograph there Wallace."

I snapped back at my brother "Don't call him Wallace, call him David or something!"

Quick as a flash Wally says "I've been called worse before."

Always made time for the fans. Man, this is fucking shit.

TBF that is not that witty, as in it is used by alot of people and is nearly a standard phrase of sorts, to such a response!

Was a sound skin, he was in a couple of my modules in UL in 2002-2003 when he was injured, was fairly quiet, got chatting to him briefly one day, sound skin.

What I like almost as much as his ability and his attitude which kept him coming back for more after so many injuries was his attitude to playing the game itself.

No mouth. No best supporting actor rehearsals. No patting oppo on the heads. No dirt, yet hard as nails and then some.

The guy just played bloody rugby.

Often thought in his first 5 or 6 years that he could have done with more devil in him, but FFS, he was that good he didn't need it. Just as well really, because if he had put his mind to dirt, I'd say the officials would have needed a tranquiliser gun to dig him out.

You want a Boys Own/Roy of the Rovers type rugby player to hold up as a role model to your young lad?

Wally.

Was never an out and out ground hog 7, but worked hard, was insanely fit and made some crucial turnovers. Not miracle balls like Pocock etc but made a mess of plenty rucks.
Remember the HEC semi in 08, when Quinlan scored, he gave interview after saying that if Wally hadnt obliterated the ruck there would have been no try.

One of my favourite players and probably didnt get the plaudits he deserved.

Consistently 1 of the best performers for Ireland and Munster and will be near impossible to replace. None of the guys playing 7 at the moment can touch him in my opinion. And this from a Leinster fan.

All the best for the future Wally, thanks for the memories!
