Go on Toonie, you know you want to pinch them. Embra have enough anyway.

Looks better. Bit of a worry for you that DTH still seems to be seen as a winger.

Quite.

We seem to have a lot of centres for next season. Hopefully that doesn't stop DTH from going to 13

Well, a lot of names listed under 'centres'. Not the same thing. Whether JRP's inside track on GT's dislike of Morrison is accurate could make or break your season.

Dunbar getting a full season at 12 is ok in my book. He and Scott should be fighting for the Scotland 12 jersey.

Who did you expect? Edinburgh have a game this weekend, Glasgow next weekend, Newcastle fighting relegation so no Hogg, Sean Lamont perhaps, but he is a big name, ok at sevens, not brilliant.

Indeed, they might lose focus on the league. I would have liked to have seen James King (a proper 7s player) McInally (If fit) and Roddy Grant.

NEW Scotland assistant coach Scott Johnson is to take charge of the SRU’s internal coaching structure after Henry Edwards exited Murrayfield at the weekend as one of at least four redundancies.

After being replaced as assistant coach with Edinburgh, Edwards has been the SRU’s Head of Performance since 2006 and is one of several high-ranked officials to be made redundant as part of chief executive Mark Dodson’s restructuring plans.

Head of Human Resources Fiona Wilson is also leaving as is Gordon Downie, the Head of Central Services, which included responsibility for IT, procurement, commercial partnerships and broadcast rights. He had come to Murrayfield in 2005 from Semple Cochrane, along with Gordon McKie and Eamon Hegarty, the chief executive and finance director who left last year. A fourth member to be made redundant is Jo Wells, the Scottish Women’s Rugby Union’s Community Manager.

The SRU declined to comment on the redundancies, but it is understood that there will be more to follow as part of an ongoing management restructuring, with more new faces being brought in to Murrayfield. One of the most high-profile arrivals will be Johnson, who was announced in December as a new member of Andy Robinson’s coaching team. He quit the Ospreys in February and is due to join up with the Scotland squad when they tour his native Australia in June.

He is currently house-hunting in Edinburgh, however, and the former Australia under-21 stand-off and centre, and assistant coach with Wales and Australia, is now understood to be preparing to take the helm of the SRU’s coaching structure as an elite coaching director.

Although the SRU already has a Director of Performance Rugby in New Zealander Graham Lowe, the role for Johnson echoes the SFA’s hiring of Mark Wotte, the former Dutch internationalist, as their first Performance Director. Wotte managed 11 clubs, including Southampton, before joining the SFA last June and quickly identified a key weaknesses that exists in football – the lack of intense development – which is also a major issue in rugby.

It appears that the SRU are, similarly, looking far afield for ideas on how to improve Scottish rugby. Regarded as an ‘off-the-wall’ character, Johnson had a brief spell as caretaker coach of Wales and was head coach of the USA Eagles for six months before taking over as director of coaching with Welsh club Ospreys in 2009.

He was head-hunted by Scotland coach Andy Robinson after the World Cup in an effort to bring to Scottish rugby what Robinson termed “a sage-like figure who can really add to what we’re doing”.

Johnson agreed a four-year contract with the SRU on a salary believed to be around £200,000 a year, and, while initially it was stated that his role would include coaching the Scotland squad as “senior assistant coach” and improving the SRU’s scouting network, it now appears that, outside of the Test window, he will be tasked with improving the Scottish coaching system.

The SRU declined to make any comment yesterday on Edwards’ redundancy and Johnson’s remit, but SRU chief executive Mark Dodson said of Johnson at the time of his appointment: “This is a significant appointment for Scottish Rugby. In addition to working with Andy and the national management team, we are finalising an important wider role for Scott in helping us to better identify Scottish-qualified talent around the world.”

Johnson said then: “I’m excited by this challenge. Scotland has a great history in rugby and, with Andy, there’s a real focus point to get it back to where it belongs on the world stage by creating something new and brighter.”

Dodson has already embarked on a new direction in providing close to £2m in new funding for the Edinburgh and Glasgow teams for next season, which has allowed them to strengthen their squads, and is due to meet the leading club coaches in Scotland this month in an effort to ease growing tensions at the number of leading coaching posts being filled from overseas, potentially stifling local talent, and without the opportunity for ambitious Scots to apply.

A key plank of Edwards’ job remit was also coach education and it will be interesting to discover whether Johnson takes over that aspect of Scottish rugby development.

Edinburgh Rugby are calling on supporters to bring the curtain down on the 2011/12 season with an emotional farewell to ten faithful servants of the club this weekend at Murrayfield and Scotstoun.

Edinburgh Rugby fans can then complete a great weekend of rugby with half-price party stand tickets for day two of The Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s at Scotstoun Stadium this Sunday 6 May.

Six months after retiring from the international scene, 109-times capped Chris Paterson will bring an end to one of the most famous playing careers in Scottish rugby history.

The full-back has spent more than ten years at the club, during which time he wrote his name into the history books of Edinburgh Rugby while breaking just about every record for his country.

The nation’s top points scorer and record male cap holder will take up a new non-playing role with Edinburgh Rugby and Scottish Rugby with further details announced next week.

Mike Blair, who confirmed his departure a fortnight ago, will be joined by long-standing servants Phil Godman and hooker Andrew Kelly, with the 23-times Scotland capped stand-off set to join Edinburgh Rugby’s 150 club with an appearance this Saturday.

The club will also bid farewell to popular flanker Alan MacDonald, who first joined the club as an apprentice in 2004 and went on to make 98 appearances for the club. He has been capped four times for Scotland, in the 2009 Autumn Tests and in the 2010 RBS 6 Nations.

Kelly’s front-row colleagues, Scotland-capped Kyle Traynor and Jack Gilding, ever-presents in this season’s landmark campaign, are also leaving the club, as are Argentine lock Esteban Lozada and full-back Jim Thompson.

The latter will miss the black and red farewell to represent Scotland in the Emirates Airline Glasgow 7s on the same day, with supporters able to cheer on Thompson on day two for half-price.

Edinburgh Rugby head coach, Michael Bradley, said: “Saturday will be a memorable match for a number of reasons; we’ll bring the curtain down on an incredible season, say farewell to these fine players and, at the final whistle, look to the future and begin preparations to capitalise on this landmark year.

“It’ll be an emotional day for fans and players alike, as they show their mutual appreciation for the role they’ve played for the club over the years.

“We’ve enjoyed an historic season in the Heineken Cup this year with a number of memorable matches here at Murrayfield. However our form in the RaboDirect PRO12 has been a constant frustration, so this Saturday will be about drawing a line under that element of our season and sending these guys off on a high.”

The club also confirmed that the short-term contract of prop Ulises Gamboa has come to an end.

Mossy - Unexpected, glad he's staying in a behind the scenes role.
Blair - Already known about, would be happy if he stayed playing like this season
WCP - No sleep lost
Ned - see above
Gilding - Thank fuk
Traynor - see above
Thompson - Good squad player, be sad to see him go
MacDonald - Another good player but apparently Smith doesn't like him
Lozada - *shrugs*

Young twins left out

Colin Gregor (Scotland 7s), Andrew Turnbull (Scotland 7s), Mark Robertson (Scotland 7s), Struan Dewar (Scotland 7s), James Fleming (Scotland 7s), John Houston (Edinburgh Rugby), Jim Thompson (Edinburgh Rugby), Michael Fedo (Team Northumbria), *Ross Miller (Glasgow Hawks), Sean Kennedy (Stirling County), Adam Ashe (Stirling County).

That seems like an awful lot of players to be released, any news on more signings?

Not bothered about Traynor, Gilding, Kelly, Lozada or Godman.

Shame for McDonald and Thompson as they were both stuck behind better players and never really got the game-time they needed to develop.

Heard Blair's move to Perpignan may be in jeopardy because of budget cuts, would happily keep him
if his form continues in the same vien.

Personally think Grant Shiells would be a good signing seeing as Newcastle are going down and Jacobson is nearing the end.

That rumour about Smith not liking MacDonald is just that - a rumour from his fanbois on the Embra site.

MacDonald and Thompson are unbelievably underwhelming players and they are standing in the way of new blood. A whole gash front row gone, thank goodness. Lozada should never have been signed.

I read somewhere that Mossie was off to NZ for some coaching training, will be interesting to see how that develops. Personally I think he will make a great coach, a real thinker about the game with the respect of all.

Are Edinburgh not beginning to look a little threadbare in the front five now, surely Bradley can't be relying on the youngsters coming through?

Yeah i would go along with that, he also strikes me as the type of guy to walk the long road and cut his teeth properly before jumping into a hotseat, not that we would do a Martin Johnson type thing up here and parachute someone with fuck all experience in to lead the national team.

They would be threadbare with those useless cunts Traynor and Gillding there too. Actually that's a bit unfair on Traynor, he's just been gash this season - Gillding never was and never will be a rugby player.

Wasn't Ryan Grant a temp loan to the Weegies?

So we've got:

Jacobson - LH
Yapp - LH / TH
Cross - TH
VP Nell - TH
Niven - TH

Surely another LH that is over the age of 21 wouldn't go a miss.

As in poor on both sides?

Bradley should be using his knowledge to find a baby eating Georgian front row rather than an 8 we don't need.

Parker is a big lad - who knows. Glad McAlpine has signed.

But he really shouldn't have signed the Georgian and Yapp and used the money on an established lock.

Is 5 locks enough?

One more LH and it should be a pretty solid squad. Possibly another, more experienced fly-half wouldn't go a miss either.

What happened to Russouw?

I'll reserve judgement on Parker good to see MacAlpine being brought in. Wasn't too hard to see though

It's one more than we've had this season, with the four including the useless fanny Lozada and the Blndside cum Lock that is Cox (who has done well but isn't an out and out Lock).

Would be surprised to see another prop arrive given that we now have 6 - Cross, Jacobsen, Yapp, Nel, Niven and Hislop. I'm sure theyll add an EDP but nothing else.

Don't know on the stand-off situation. Either they are going to go with Laidlaw plus Leonard and Hunter (with cover from Tonks?) or they'll have to sign another 10 and have a bit of a logjam at 9 (Laidlaw, Rees, Leck, Black). I'd probably prefer to see an experienced 10 signed on a short deal whilst giving Hunter and, especially, Leonard more game time with a hope that one breaks through for next season.
