I love my les paul standard. It's not vintage, or particularly flamey, but connect it into a Marshall and a Jim Dunlop crybaby and I'm 18 again with all the hard rockin dreams that implies.

A lot of the LP's between 58 and 60 had pretty plain tops. In the search for the ultimate reissue they often interviewed old ladies who worked at the factory in Kalamazoo, Michigan. All the specs about how they were made seemed to be pretty random. So a nice guitar cranked as you say is a real delight. As much as I love figured wood (and I do) I like plain tops too. Some of the super flakey ones just look TOO deliberate.

Fingers rather not good and a switch from left to right is proving problematical.

Got a fabulous teacher and he has a stonking Fender. Weighs a ton and is up there.

Yes. 90 x 90 and keep the file size down. Drove me mad for an hour or two.

I am persevering and will continue to do so - my tutor reckons I'm ahead of schedule - but it oftens feels impossible. But I am determined to get to a level where I can play some decent tracks (not just 3/4 chord stuff). I have a target of learning some sing a long stuff for or family holiday in June.

Evening Globus - glad to see you've taken the plunge and going for it Right Handed - I guess that it brings you down to my level. Probably even more frustrating for you having to re-learn stuff.

Guitars are diefinietly really cool gadgets though.

A hunk of shit called a Fender Squier thats just for mucking around with as i prefer bass.

Always liked these for a bit of shenanigans... preferably with a Floyd Rose.

One of the nicest necks I ever got my hands on was a green one custom made by Bernie Rico with a shamrock on the headstock (bit cheesy)
Wasn't crazy about the colour though the figure was lovely quilting.

It was in Music Maker on Exchequer St. forever...

I've been following your posts regarding re-learning right handed. I'm sure somebodys suggested it but have you practiced in front of a mirror? It will help your brain adjust.

Bought an Epiphone Les Paul today - Cherry burst, flamed maple top with a nice hardcase. Very Nice but now I've got it home, I think I prefer my Tokai .

Horses for courses I'dve thought?

Tokai for versatility, Epiphone for pretending to be Slash.

Martin DX1AE with Fishman Sonitone System

Hasn't made me play any better but my noodlings sound sweeter/more sonorous

Anyone any thoughts about this, is it worth the cash? I don't want something uber expensive as I've only been playing for 2 years.

For that sort of budget I'd be tempted to look at a Yamaha acoustic. Even their entry-level guitars are excellent.

I'm sure it's ok. You need to play guitars though, I've occasionally preferred the sound/feel of a significantly cheaper guitar, although I am a plywood aficionado now.

You may not be able to get them, but always worth seeking out the La Patrie guitars - all made by the same people, but each brand is aimed at different segments of the market (but with some pretty significant overlap it seems)

Art & Lutherie - bottom end, all ply, but sweet
Norman - you'll get solid woods here, but shouldn't be very expensive
Simon & Patrick - higher end, but still not Martin money
Seagull - mid to high end, seem to have wide fretboards

Second the suggestion for looking at Yamaha's too.

Looks the part. Possibly a daft question, but what sort of stuff do you play on it?

I was listening to some fantastic Jose Gonzales tunes this morning.

Pretty much anything you want .. strum alongs (Beatles, Neil Young), blues, bluegrass. I play 12s (string gauge) so you can't get too fiddly widdly. However, as with all Martin guitars it has a lovely warm character and the sustain is truly impressive.

Currently recording some of my own stuff .. double tracking tho' as I'm not exactly Segovia

I really like his guitaring style, nice tunes!
