Graham to coach Queensland

WESTERN Force's Richard Graham will leave Perth at the end of the year to coach the Queensland Reds.

Reds incumbent Ewen McKenzie will assume a director of coaching role with the Super Rugby champions.

It is understood the Reds approached Graham, who has two years remaining on his contract at the Force.

Born in Charleville in western Queensland, Graham played fullback for Queensland and Australia A before coaching at English clubs Bath and Saracens.

Graham returned to Australia to assist Wallabies coach Robbie Deans in 2009 and became John Mitchell's assistant at the Force the following year.

He is in his second year as head coach of the Force.

We posted this at exactly the same time.

Makes it all in place for Link to take over from Deans at the end of 2013.

Yeah, sorry mate (maybe Enz can merge).

Reds must have had something like this on the cards for a while then. Dunno if Link has any guarantees, though!

Who is available for the Force?

Don't worry about it, it's big news!

Rumor is Cheika (sp), although it would need to be a high profile coach.

Have I missed something, what has Graham done to suddenly warrant being a 'marquee' coaching recruit? The Force have hardly set the competition alight under his tenure. Is he the Rob Horne of coaches, having somehow developed a lofty professional reputation well beyond anything he has actually delivered in real life? If I was a Reds fan I'd be fucking pissed off right now.

the field for next Wallabies' coach widens:

Nucifora
McKenzie
McGahan
Graham

anyone else?

Agreed, AC. x(

Force could have hit the jackpot. Maybe Cheika, as per EF's source.

Even up-and-comers like Todd Louden or Rob Penney could work out well.

bejaysus! how did i miss the obvious favourite for the job? :uhoh:

the replacement at the Force may also be a candidate.

Robbie D is going to have to coach out of his skin to get another contract.

This is actually a cunning plan by the NZRU to have Dingo available to replace Hanson in two years and have RD back in time to take over the AB's two years out from the WC. /conspiracy mode

Just joking, mate. Wrong Graham. It's really Graham Henry going to the Reds, not Woody.

Thats very interesting.

Saw on facebook that they had a "big announcement" to make around 45 mins ago. I had thought it was something pedestrian like signing up Harvey to a longer contract.

Not sure yet if this is good or bad news. If it means Chieka, I am happy.
But I would have preferred the announcement wait until the end of the season.

You would think that with all that mining money the Force could easily acquire themselves a world class coach?

Maybe cut a few million from the propaganda campaign and invest it into the Force?

What propaganda campaign?
They have a good income from sponsors, but they also have a very high gate taking, and a high members base. That is where the money comes from.

Just referring to the propaganda campaign the mining companies have put out in response to the mining tax...

Drawing a long bow here... :D

The last thing we need seeping into Southern Hemisphere rugby is this Director of Rugby nonsense. You're either a head coach or the province/franchise CEO. How many cooks do you need to make a rugby team run, pass and tackle?

Slim prolly referring to the Minerals Council cashed-up PR campaign, Farva.

Do coaching staff come under the Aus salary cap too?

Reds paying an extra salary now for two "head coaches". Dunno if that's the way to go when they lost a good hands-on man after defensive coach Matt Taylor got poached by Scotland.

McKenzie to the Wobblies is the only explanation.

ARU has made no official announcements about their coaches.

Something big is happening!!!!

Oh. I had already saddled up my high horse :(

Having said that, working families / vietnamese immigrants / marginalised women all find a home at the Force too.

I've just had a terrible thought...

Pat Lam is going to be in need of a job next year.

And the PR team at the Force will probably call it a coup :(

there are other explanations.
some with conspiracy suggestions.
some without conspiracy suggestions.

ARU has announced something serious about coaches:
- McGahan as an additional assistant
- Blades as scrums and ??? assistant

is there another one?

i'd be thinking that McKenzie is making sure he has real options in coming years - such as moving out of coaching into management. he's long taken a keen interest in management and has been known to participate.
might McKenzie be thinking that CEO of the ARU might be a good gig later on?

i'd also be contemplating that McKenzie and Sergeant Slaughter may really believe in the DOR/ head coach structure.

It's already happened mate. WP had Nick Mallett as a Director of Rugby and it didn't last long term. Mallett went abroad as hasn't coached in SA since then. I think Jake White was a director of coaching at the Lions for a short period during his coaching consultancy hiatus. Rebels have Macqueen as DoR. I do agree it is a bit crap and a lot of managers/coaches in English Rugby/Football have quit or refuse to work with an extra layer of management looking over their shoulder.

Cheika would be funny as he was knocked back in favour of John Mitchell however I think he has another season left at Stade Francais. The Force couldn't afford a pay out.

Penney would depend on where he stands in the Munster job app process and the Force management prefer an Australian coach. Steve Meehan, Tony Hanks, Andy Friend to join the list of applicants?

Yeah. Anthony Foley is suggested as the front runner for Munster in some circles as well.

Penney still has this year to run on his NPC Canterbury contract also, and is relying on a release.

Canterbury will not block Rob Penney's path if he is appointed head coach of Irish club Munster.

Although Penney is contracted until the end of this year, Canterbury Rugby Football Union chief executive Hamish Riach said the province would release him early if he is chosen to replace Munster coach Tony McGahan who is set to join Robbie Deans at the Wallabies.

"No, we wouldn't stand in his way," Riach said. "He let me know midway through last week he has got this opportunity and has been upfront about it. During his time here he has given us longevity, success and his contribution has been outstanding."

It is understood Munster forwards coach Anthony Foley and former All Blacks captain Tana Umaga have also been short-listed. Foley has been reported in Ireland as being the frontrunner with Umaga touted as a potential sidekick to school their backs.

Sir, I must advise you that I shall fight to the death any proposal from the NZ rugby industry to dump its toxic waste in Australia.
