I wrote an e-mail to BYU TV expressing my displeasure with the fact that they are showing softball instead of BYU vs. Utah rugby match, and I got the following response:
Quote:
Thank you for taking the time to write and we certainly understand & appreciate your interest in BYU's successful rugby team and potential related television coverage on BYUtv. Please be aware that our physical & financial resources only allow the capacity to televise NCAA-sanctioned sports at this time.

Again, thank you for your inquiry and your support of BYUtv sports programming.

Ask them when the last time BYU softball had 4000 people show up to a game was.

Speaking of BYU...the new eligibility rules for college rugby ie no players over 26 will hit them pretty hard. I think it is a bs rule, no other college sports that I know of have an age restriction as long as you are a legitimate student. I really hope they reconsider.

Brachie is an excellent player. BeachBoy know him well and told me since way back about him. He is pretty usefull in midfield and 15 and wont mind to see him getting more chances in the Stormers setup. If I remember correct BB qouted that they got him from Ikeys (UCT) koshuis liga (Boarding school competition)

Enough of an endorsement for me. Get after him USAR.

If he can shift inside to 10 even better. Come on down with Fudge Mabeta while you're at it.

BYU TV is not being smart. I have never seen a ad for rugby gear or uniforms for a BYU rugby match which will be watched across the world. Plenty of companies would jump at the chance for that.

Pass along the names Callum Black (prop, Ulster) and Fudge Mabeta (lock, Blue Bulls/Bulls) too. All US-born.

Sample lineup for the June tests

1 Black
2 Biller
3 MacDonald
4 Mabeta
5 LaValla
6 Gagiano/Stanfill
7 Clever
8 Manoa
9 Petri
10 Eloff/Malifa
11 Ngwenya
12 Braiche
13 Emerick
14 Paterson
15 Wyles

That could possibly be our best ever lineup.

Goe, i wrote in this thread after talking to BYU TV and the person on the phone was going to copy portions of this thread and send to her superiors. If BYU had any sense they wouls sell advertising in a rugby specific way to finance the broadcasting of rugby.

Not that it will come as a surprise but I had no idea BYU TV was in my channel lineup until I read they were showing rugby, and I'm certain that's the case for many others. I ended up watching a few football/basketball games on it thereafter. Missed out on the softball. :D

Grand Prix Entertainment Partners with NFL Network for Exclusive Live US Broadcast Coverage of Grand Prix Rugby Sevens Championships

LOS ANGELES, Apr 12, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Grand Prix Entertainment, a Los Angeles-based sports and entertainment enterprise, announced today it has named NFL Network as its exclusive US broadcast partner for Grand Prix’s July 2013 professional rugby sevens championships in partnership with USA Rugby.

“On the heels of our recent announcements extending our exclusive partnership with USA Rugby through 2018 and then moving to secure AEG Facility’s Home Depot Center as our venue partner, the important task of selecting the right U.S. broadcast partner was a key strategic priority and we could not be more pleased with the relationship we have formed with NFL Network,” said Grand Prix Sports Chairman Alan Rothenberg.

“NFL Network is excited to work with Grand Prix Rugby to bring our fans professional rugby sevens championships featuring the top teams and players in the world,” said Mark Quenzel, Senior Vice President of Programming and Production for NFL Network.

USA Rugby, an official member of the Unites States Olympic Committee as well as the Rugby World Cup's International Rugby Board, had previously awarded Grand Prix the exclusive rights to own, operate and globally broadcast the professional sport of Rugby Sevens, which was soon after named a new Olympic sport.

William Tatham, Chairman of Grand Prix Entertainment, said of the announcement, “From day one NFL Network was our preferred network partner. We are excited NFL Network supports our vision for the sport of Rugby, which just so happens to be the “Father of American Football.”

Nigel Melville, CEO of USA Rugby, was equally enthusiastic, saying, “When I came to the U.S. five years ago I believed Rugby could become a major U.S. professional sport. Olympic inclusion and now a broadcast partner in NFL Network takes USA Rugby and our partners at Grand Prix all that much closer to the dream.”

GPE executive board member Neal Pilson, former president of CBS Sports who negotiated the carriage agreement, said, "NFL Network's live coverage of the Grand Prix Rugby Championship events will exceed any prior exposure of rugby on US television."

Well they beat us 82-7 this past weekend. Although we are down a bit.

Example A of why I hate press releases:

I'd take recent rugby coverage on NBC, Versus, and even Universal as larger than the NFL Network IN JULY. Another league that by the way get this same live coverage on NFL Network, but for a lot more games, is the CFL.

Topics: Goff missing scores, Rocco Mauer interview, a bit on the USA 7s team's performance in Hong Kong and Tokyo, college rugby, BYU is the best college team in the country, a heated debate on college eligibility rules changing, and Super League. Note: my club wasn't one of the ones in MARFU that got upset with NOVA flying in guys from around the country because we didn't care about 7s at the time.

Ryan,

While I agree it's a ridiculous statement, can't agree with Universal being bigger than NFLN in July. Most people don't even know what Universal is or if they have it. Lots of people watch NFLN year round and this is a good audience to target IMO.

Having approached these Grand Prix guys with skepticism I have to say getting games on NFLN is pretty awesome.

I've said that sevens should be pitched to colleges as something to showcase young skill players in the spring and this is a significant step in partnering with football. I'm certain they will sign one or two known NFL names on the back of this to attract viewers.

It's whatever to me. Good job getting it if they were paid a rights fee (which is not mentioned in the press release, they could've just given away the programming for free), but there's no reason to watch the NFL Network in July, and the Canadian Football League games on the channel would probably get higher ratings. How often do you talk to people in the U.S. about them watching the Stampeders-Tigercats game on the NFL Network Friday nights?

Quote:

That's the one annoyance I have. They have the stadium for the championship (the Toolbox in Carson), they have a date (July 2013), they have a TV partner now (NFL Network). Do we have any semblance of teams, what players there are, what's the salary structure, how many rounds are there? Are they touring around the country or is it a one-off thing?

"They're going to sign a known NFL name." First off, it's not going to be a current name because I imagine injury picked up in a non-NFL-sanctioned sport disqualifies a contract, so no one will take that risk. Not to mention how much will this thing really pay to actually entice these guys? So if you're getting a guy, it's probably someone retired from the NFL.

They said this was going to be a world-class thing, so are they bringing in a bunch of Pacific Islanders, Kiwis, and South Africans not good enough for Super Rugby or the IRB Sevens Circuit or is it going to be for domestic players from Division I club rugby and those guys get something like a $500 game diem? They've answered no questions at all on the competitive aspects of what they are trying to sell except "it's pro".

So for drawing names, what they're going to get are ex-college football stars that couldn't hack it as a pro, the current 7s national team which with due respect to them they're not names to your run-of-the-mill football fan and no football fan has a clue who Miles Craigwell is, maybe a few guys that play in the Arena League (the Canadian Football League in terms of pay will be above this league), a few guys from overseas that weren't good enough to get a contract in their own country otherwise why would they come here, and club-level American domestic rugby players, who with due respect to them really because they're a lot better than me, but they're not good enough to be paid anything. Do you agree with that analysis?

Hey, it's great that someone is putting money into the sport, but what are they actually putting their money into? They've not answered these things and apparently they're starting in 15 months. With Rothenberg in charge it's probably going to be similar to when MLS started where every club in the league is owned by the central organization (called single-entity) and they'll pay the players peanuts.

Quote:
goeagles: Lots of people watch NFLN year round.

Those people need to get a life. Hey, I watch probably too much sports for my own good too but damn at least I'm watching an actual event take place. The entire reason for the NFL Network is to gouge money out of cable and satellite subscribers for them to watch 8 regular season games a year, or in 365 days about 30 hours' worth of good programming. And the 2nd-biggest draw after that is what, the Draft? It's not even like they're the NHL where a fan can look and say there's a shortage of national coverage of the NFL that the NFL Network provides them.

If they're watching the NFL Network in July they're obviously pretty committed to the sport. No harm in those type of people getting more exposure to the game.

Damn, just checked and the Glendale-SFGG game tomorrow is at the same time as the Sharks-Blues Game 2. Was hoping to get over to Glendale for that one since it's the de facto 2011 national championship.

I noticed that James Paterson is no longer with the Highlanders. Did he not get picked back up because of the failed WC test? Seems he got plenty of game time with them in 2011 and he couldn't have been that off form.

So this evening ESPNU is showing women's bowling. Participating teams include Arkansas State, Fairleigh Dickinson, Valparaiso, Central Missouri, Maryland-eastern shore, Sacred Heart and Vanderbuilt. This just shows that broadcasters are willing to show no-name schools playing minor sports. Why can't rugby get on ESPNU? Is it because women's bowling is an NCAA sport?

Glendale should be forced in to the Super League, they are beyond D1 good. If NY can have Old Blue and NYAC, the Denver area can have the Barbs and Glendale. The Barbs need to get over themselves, plus SL is now down a western conference team with the Warriors pulling out.

Barbos know any reason to play for them would be gone and pretty much anyone in the future would pick Glendale over them.

One really nice development this year in high school rugby is that the two best leagues in the country (Utah and Norcal) are the most competitive they've ever been and other teams besides Jesuit and Highland (Trybe) are stepping up. The more teams we get on their level, the better American rugby will be. Exciting times.

Enthusiasm: loved the game

Good assessment and good feedback from players so there *blows giant raspberry*

St Mary's beats Cal 20-18. They were missing some first choice players in their loss to BYU. Their 1/4 against Utah should be a great game.

St. Marys sounds like they have a nice squad.
