I just rewatched Gladiator, lastime I watched it was when it first came out in 2000. I had forgotten why I didn't like it so here I was hoping that this version he actually escapes and comes back with his army. But I remembered rightly he didn't and disappointed me again. Why did they raise our hopes so much, did they run out of money? Cunts.

His wife and had been murdered, the only thing that kept him alive was the drive to avenge them. Once that had been achieved he was free to join them in the afterlife, of course it shouldn't have ended with him surviving and toppling Caesar at the head of an army.

The opening scene where he's preparing his troops before killing lots and lot of Germans, with his faithful hound right behind him. He utter the immortal line "Upon my signal, unleash hell," when someone's dozy girlfriend pipes up
"Hell? That's a funny name for a dog."

Imagine seeing Shannon Tweed listed in the cast, with a one-star rating in the tv guide ... yet not one tit flash. Must be the only movie she's ever done where she didn't get 'em out! I blame Bill Maher!

One of my pet peeves at the moment is movie trailers that reveal about 80% of the bloody plot!

A number of comedies have had literally no extra great laughs in them once you see the trailer.

The viewers were entitled to think that the army would rescue him as it was made clear that he had their loyalty. Rather than kill (excuse the pun) that storyline early on, they fed it and then a big led down. He couldve killed the emperor in battle and die himself. My conclusion is that it wouldve cost too much to have another epic battle. It would've been the best movie ever if they did.

Re-watch the Departed, it will have the complete opposite effect, utter disappointment, followed by joy.

 Reminds me of when I watched at the cinema with a few mates. We were sitting in the middle of the aisle and during the battle one of my mates got up to go to the toilet had to past about 9 seats and a full cinema. Face palm moment.

Not sure you can call it a disapppointment, but definitely a massive teaser. Don't know if anyone has seen Equilibrium, very nice flick, that was unlucky enough to be released at the same time as The Matrix 2 in cinemas, and the trailer looked very Matrixesque, so I don't think anybody went.

There's a massive buildup through the film for a sword/gun battle between the hero (Christian Bale) and the main "enforcer" of the bad guys. Really looking like it'll be awesome. The moment arrives, and it's over in seconds. Can't say disappointment, since you then do get a big battle (and just had a whole long battle scene leading up) but extremely unexpected. Quite nice though.

Teminator Salvation - those clips from the earlier terminator fims when you see glimpses of the future (the machines tank tracks grinding over an ocean of human skulls etc) had me hoping for this film to be made since I was a nipper. So a two decade tease and then we get that banal paint by the numbers piece of turd instead :frown:

Indeed, quite apart from the fact that they were waiting for him to lead them into Rome and he didn't make it to them, Richard Harris had a dream that was Rome that didn't include a military coup.

I'm also curious as to what would have constituted an epic battle when there is noone to fight against. It's made clear in the film that there is no military presence in Rome other than the empires guard.

Lastly, unless you don't really understand film beyond visceral visual treats, I'm not sure you're going to have extra sympathy for Russell if he cuts a swathe of death through his comrades and pitches brother against brother in pursuit of personal vengeance. Not to mention the collateral damage visited on the city and it's citizens

I remember Phantom Menace was that way. After seeing a couple different movie trailers and commercials for a few months leading up to it, it was like you'd seen half the movie.

Movies that can get off on their brand (like the Star Trek movie or comic book movies for example), I don't get why they don't make trailers to show as little as possible. It's like telling the audience "hey, our movie is coming out, but if you want to see what's in it, buy a ticket!"

Deep Impact has to be the king of seeing everything you needed to see in the trailer?

I'm sure Crazy Islander wanted a subtle analysis of Sulla's brief dictatorship, where he managed to rein in the more bloodthirsty habits of his erstwhile 'citizens' and stabilised the republic for the last time in its history.

The movie that did the best job of showing restraint was the Godzilla remake. They intentionally never showed Godzilla in any of their advertising.

How exactly does an avocado jungle of death work then?

Re OP, has to be Bound. You get about 20 seconds of Gershon and Tilly to distract from one of the worst scripts in existence. Brought to you by the Wachowski brothers. Alongside the Matrix 2 & 3 where Monica Bellucci also DOES F*CK ALL. Useless gits.

Prometheus, surely.

Set up so many questions in the first hour, then answered precisely none of them and ended with a half-arsed setup for a future film.

I heard a funny anecdote last week about a U2 gig in Scotland a few years ago
They were recording the gig for a DVD or something.

At one point Bono throws his leg up on the foot-light and bows his head. He starts slowly clicking his fingers every few seconds as the crowd quietens down and the tension of the "What is the wanker up to now?"moment starts to build.

Then he drops the bomb. "Every time I click my fingers...........

Click

Click

.......A child dies in Africa."

Complete silence, until someone shouted "Would ya stop fuckin' doing it then" and the whole place erupted.
It never made it on to the DVD.

I don't know if it's true but it made me laugh.

Gangs of New York was pretty disappointing I thought. They spend two hours building up to a show down then bloody civil war politics get in the way. Typical Irish.

Comparing GONY to the likes of Prometheus and Terminator Salvation is fightin talk...

Image

It didn't live up to it's potential, but still a decent film.

I read the old book it was inspired by, pretty interesting read.

This. So much this.

I watched this on my laptop on a plane, and was a little distracted, so when I was disappointed I put it down to the fact that I missed a few salient plot points whilst distracted by a cute air wench.

So a couple of weeks later I sat down, distraction free, and watched it in the quiet of my lounge room.

I didn't miss anything, it was just a stupid fucking film, and all the soaring visuals and attractive cast in the world couldn't make up for it.

Bane's death in the Dark Knight Rises.

Spoiler: show
He was my favourite villain from the Nolan Bat Trilogy and after Catwoman blasted him with the Batpod I was thinking "Is that it?"

He needed a more epic death.

Very True, in fact:

Spoiler: show
Once Talia Al Ghul shows up, Bane as a character effectively has his balls chopped off and the film pretty much goes to shit from there - I was quite enjoying it up to that point.

Star Trek Generations

The death of Captain Kirk falling off a bridge??? He basically plays Picards bitch for half the movie, non of the other originals are in it ( apart from the first 2 minutes ).

Promised so much but was a steaming pile of dross. Why the fark Shatner signed up to die like a punk is beyond me.

Other than First Contact none of the Next Generation should be considered canon.

Fell asleep while watching it in the movie theatre. Great CGI but an awful, predictable, silly and stupid story. If it is on TV I can't watch more then a few minutes of it because it is so stupid.

Seen the trailer for Ender's Game yet?

Having read the book, I instantly recognised the big climax scene, right there in the trailer.

And those have usually been ruined as they show you the punch line without the actual joke.

The talking dog in Men in Black was a clasic example of that. It might have been funny if you didn't already know that it was the dog and not the rif raff look alike who was the alien.

I agree, and I can't believe how critics and movie wanker types fawn over it.

Sun light through the trees, character stares at Solomon Islander kids with ginga hair, 50 million cameos that don't amount to shit etc.

Adrien Brody and Jim Caveziel are two of my least favourite actors and it's no surprise they were the focus of this film.

I hear ya OP. Would've been great to see Maximus lead a victorious army into Rome and kill that sniveling Commodus. Still a great film though and at least he still kills Commodus. I just thought the end was kind of corny. The idea that a chicken shit wimp like Commodus would take on the mighty warrior Maximus is just silly. Despite the wound if Maximus was as badass as he'd been portrayed throughout the rest of the film he'd still make short work of a pussy like Commodus.
