The clincher might be the lack of SD storage on the Nexus - plus the Note's camera is much better.

Nexus is a great phone but battery life is terrible.

User error!

The only thing that is poor about the Nexus is it's camera.

My Nexus is just fine,

have not needed to SD card so far, more than enough space for 3 movies and my current playlists.

Camera is good.

Battery life is just fine (with the help of Juice Defender free version)

Some of the Google I/O announcements and updates are pretty cool.

the new Google+ Tablet interface is much better,

Google Glass announcement was simply awesome.

Q - not available in the UK since Google Music isn't :/ - nice looking device.

Google Maps/Navigation now with downloadable/offline content - downloaded the ~40MB for greater London last night.

Nexus 7 - looks pretty Good.

Jelly Bean 4.1 - should be a nice improvement - coming to the Nexus phone is July.

Chrome browser updated to v20?

Can't wait to see what's coming today/tomorrow.

all 3000+ devs at the conference got a Nexus phone, Nexus 7 and a Q... that's pretty nice .

As an aside, how the fuck do you code an alarm app to be inaccurate or simply not work much of the time?

I have never previously had a phone alarm fail. It beggars belief that they let them out the door in such a state.

The DoubleTwist alarm is very good, but you have to pay for it. Not sure it is worth the full-price, but is when the do the periodical half-price sale.

It's really baffling why they didn't just throw in the unit from the GSII which is excellent.

I use Alarm Clock Free by iHandySoft Inc. and it hasn't failed me yet. There's a paid version with a few added features but the free one does I need.

Cheers.

Day 2 they got a Chromebook

The Day 2 stuff was impressive, the cloud computing demo was mind numbing. 3D rendering the browser using only html and css, motion control via webcam, some really impressive and clever stuff.

For golfers- my favourite is "Calton hill golf Gps" (or gps plus for £13). Download as many courses as you like once signed up. Not great for rural Ireland though due to poor google map quality and cloud cover.

There doesn't seem to be an android version yet. Anyone know of an app like that for android?

"AutomateIt" and "Smart Places" are similar apps on Android. They both have free and paid versions.

I haven't tried it but "Tasker" is supposed to be the best, costs ~$5 in the Play store.

Right, have had a look at those. Seem to be automation apps that you can set up to do stuff like switch your phone on to silent when you get to work or enter your local movie theatre, rather than remind you to pick up your prescription as you walk past the chemist apps.

However, I have found a few that seem to do what I'm after, but haven't really tested them yet so no idea how well they work. Reviews are a bit mixed.

Hey knowledgeable Android people.

I have a Motorola Droid that was upgraded a month ago automatically-ish by my provider. Now the "push" or search for new emails only seems to happen when I wake it up, which is fucking stupid. Is there a setting I need to change?? I figure they are trying to save my battery but I want to be able to decide that.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Look under your email account settings. Should be one for "inbox check frequency" or similar. You will probably find it's set to "never" and hence will only check if you open your email.

Not using NFC till the banking apps support native on phone. Frustrating as the tech obviously exists with Google Wallet, but no-ones interested at the moment except with properietary stuff that they might be able to charge for.

Does this only happen when on wifi? If it does, you need to make sure that wifi never goes to sleep - should be in Settings>Wireless>Advanced or something similar.

FOG - just checked that and I notice "this type of email does not support push". But it is set to check every 15 minutes. Not sure why it wouldn't support push. But it can be sitting there asleep for 4 hours and I get nothing until I wake it up.

Cossax - The wifi is actually turned off on purpose when I am at this particular clients offices as they have everything locked down so tight (but not PR oddly enough 8) ) I cannot use the web on my phone when I am here because it's not one of "their" phones.

A good example was just now. I had not looked at my phone for an hour, and it showed no messages. When I read these replies I woke it up to check the settings, and 4 emails came in. ggrrrr.

That sounds like the radio is going to sleep when the screen is off. I didn't think the radio ever went to sleep with network data, only wireless.

Are you using gmail or what app?

Had a quick look around online based on the above suggestion, is there some sort of mode for your battery e.g. smart mode / power saver that automatically turns things off when the screen is off? Maybe have a play around and see if there is such a setting and turn it off?

Yeah there is actually a Smart Actions app. I will check through those and see what's happening.

I also did some messing around and see that the standard Android app does not "push" email. You need to go to a 3rd party app like gmail or K9. Am planning on looking at K9 over the next few days.

Jelly Bean 4.1 Roll-out has started! :D

not got my update yes, furiously checking every 5 mins...

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean begins rolling out to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus
By Bryan Bishop on July 10, 2012 07:12 pm 162COMMENTS

We knew it was just a matter of time, and now Google has announced that Android 4.1 Jelly Bean has begun rolling out to the HSPA+ Galaxy Nexus. For owners of the phone, the new OS will be appearing over the next few days as an over-the-air update, bringing Google Now, an improved keyboard, and several other features we covered in our extensive review of Android's latest iteration. The HSPA+ model won't be the only one getting the update either, with Google confirming that all Galaxy Nexus, Nexus S, and Motorola Xoom devices are on the list for Jelly Bean in the coming weeks and months.

One outstanding question, however, has been whether the Jelly Bean update will include changes to the unified search functionality that has been a point of contention between Apple and Samsung. Google and Samsung had been planning an OTA update to Ice Cream Sandwich that would remove any local search results from the Galaxy Nexus in favor of web-only results. We've reached out to Google for confirmation on any search changes and will update you as more information becomes available.

Update: A Google spokesperson has informed us that the company has not pushed out any changes to search functionality in connection with the Jelly Bean update.

Something like Juice Defender could be causing your problem too.

I had a look at gmail app, and it seems good for my gmail account, but it's an account for junk really and don't use it. So downloaded K9. Seems good and it can bring in mail every minute. Unfortunately my email is POP3 so no push (I think it is available for IMAP only), but every minute or 5 is fine. We'll see how the battery handles that.

I don't have Juice Defender as the Motorola droid has a built in battery saver with good options in the Smart Actions app. But with K9 they seem to be coming through very well. In my search I found a thread that you may be interested in reading (or not) about this issue. Some very intense folks on here pushing google as hard as they can thinking google give a shit:

I looked at that as i was one of the top 4 mail apps on some list. One of the comments that made me choose K9 was that when you hit "reply all" it emails it back to the sender. fookin' stupid. But I am downloading it now and will give it a go.

Oh, on the description it says it is "Ad-supoorted". It doesn't have annoying pop-up ads does it??

Small ads at the bottom of screen which aren't obtrusive and no ads when you're readingor composing mail, so OK imo.

Was looking around for a replacement for my son's Galaxy S (which I plan on pinching) and got a Motorola Defy Mini for £79 at Amazon - perfect for a teenager.

Seems OK. It has icons on top which K9 doesn't (but no biggie to use the menu from the hard buttons). I can't see where you set the "fetching" times. I will play with them both for the week and see which one I prefer. Thanks.

In my Nexus I am still running a 4.0.2 version, how do I upgrade?

you should have received an over the air update to 4.0.4 quiet a while ago. unless you're not running a stock rom.

Did not receive any air update, I have no clue what a stock rom is!

stock rom is the one that comes with the phone when you buy and is officially updated, that is it's not be hacked/modified by anyone else.

you can put the stock rom on manually is you've unlocked the bootloader but it will result is reset/wipe of the device. It is reasonably simple to do, the hardest bit is gettin the correct drivers installed on your PC to get fastboot and adb to work.

Wugs piece of software is great for achieving this.

the only this you have to be very careful of is making sure you've downloaded and applied the correct rom to your device.

http://forums.androidcentral.com/verizo ... -12-a.html

The basic process is this.

1. unlock bootloader
2. this will allow you to get to hte fastboot menu on the phone.
3. use fastboot to tempararily boot the machine to a recover rom.
4. use the recover rom to flash the new image to the phone.
5. reboot for updated goodness.

the 4.0.4 to 4.1.1 OTA update linked above does not result in a wipe of the device, it's not the full rom it's the update so it will update the device without wiping it clean, however this only applies if your bootloader is unlocked.

Just got the jelly bean update on the Galaxy Nexus. Very similar in layout etc with a few minor tweaks but it's noticeably quicker. Shazam won't be happy with the inbuilt music recognition software either I reckon... all in all a good update, I do love this phone.

I've tested it a bit (have the widget but not JB yet) and it couldn't recognise AC/DC songs but got pretty much everything else.

Got a One-X, very happy with it indeed.

The Nexus 7 seems to be shifting.

I'm not that impressed by Google Now but I love the UX improvements, noticeably smoother and faster. Apparently it's all running at 60FPS now and they did a lot of performance optimisation, called it Project Butter. Important thing to target as iOS still has the edge in smoothness IMO.

I'm still on fucking gingerbread on my GS2. Why can't it find a software update when I check for one?
A friend has the same phone on the exact same bill package and he's on Jellybean, as far as I can tell.
