The solution is for the owners to get someone like Houts or ASMO to fix up the holes.

It's not rocket science

Is it just my imagination or are the spam thread titles getting better/more readable.

Would it be possible to have spam MODS. Posters who are able to delete threads but no other MOD functionality. Obviously if it went to their head sefton style and they deleted anything other than a spam thread they would have to die.

As I said earlier, this is very easy to sort out. The software has the capability to deal with spam, the options are just not being used. phpBB is used all over the world, is one of the best out there and has lots of features including five different captcha plug ins available.

Why the spam is getting worse is simple. Once the spammers sense a weakness, they arrive in droves. The problem is that once they do, things get worse including virus attacks on the server and script kiddies testing the fruits of their labours on the OS.

This is really simple stuff and requires a minimum of effort to fix. I suspect that admin approval for new accounts is not being used because it requires direct input from admins on a daily basis (who don't seem to be arsed quite frankly), but using Captcha for new registrations is a one time fix that will take all of a minute to set up.

http://www.google.com/recaptcha for a FREE set of keys.

Edit: Just to add that I'm giving this as professional advice. I run my own web hosting service with everything from cloud servers to simple web sites and have the capability and knowledge to install over 260 different software packages for our customers. phpBB is one of many forum systems which we offer free and I've used it extensively.

That's all very well, Clash, and no doubt very good advice, but this is Planet Rugby. This is the mob so incompetent they managed to accidentally over-write the old bored which they'd planned to save as read-only. It doesn't matter how simple it is, or that a minimum of effort is required, because they're abso-fucking-lutely useless.

I am offering that. I just want to blat the adverts as fast as possible.

I have no interest in modding other thread content.

G-man: all well and good but to be honest, setting a mod "spam-splatterer" only function may be beyond their capabilities. I mean, the fact that we have been crying out for what I am led to believe is a simple process to prevent the spam in the 1st place and which has yet to materalise, leads me to think that an SS Mod would not be possible. Bu it would make a damn fine "handle"!

OK HK. Just give me full modding capability but I would only use it to get rid of the pests.

I have no interest in trundling through threads of another nature.

I can only offer.

They didn't want the aggro or overhead so simply deleted it. I didn't check but would wager this board is running on the same junk as the old one.

I'm a techie's arsehole, so ignorant, though thought I managed to follow a discussion on the matter well enough to form the idea that the overhead & aggro was somewhere between negligible and zero. More than one poster professed the capacity to save the entire thing without difficulty, given the opportunity. I also got the impression that resetting postcounts, registration dates etc, was somewhere between laziness and incompetence.

I could be wrong though.

The current mods do not have the power to create any new mods. They have very little power because of the restrictions from the admin.

How loud do we need to shout to the Admin, Fangle?

I'm quite happy to blat the ads on sight. I'll not touch the other threads on here.

Then you have comments from Timeeeeeeeh like this:

Photo uploads are a no no. We're not an image hosting service.

As you've highlighted, the ability of PR to find the most clueless techies since the Slag Brothers leaves all manner of possibilities available.

It's not like it is difficult to guess who is a spammer. As mentioned, a simple CAPTCHA system on registration would cut about 90% of this shit out.

If only the admin would institute it. As it is the poor mods can't do anything.

They are using the GD captcha option which is one of the easiest to circumvent. There are four more including reCaptcha which only requires public and private keys to be set up and the keys are free from http://www.google.com/recaptcha.

Once you have the keys you can use them as many times as you want on as many domains as you want.

Suddenly I'm not so sure that I want to see this issue resolved straight away......

Crash, with the amount of times that you've linked to reCaptcha I'm starting to wonder if you're a particularly eloquent (by their standards) spambot yourself.

It's starting to feel like that alright, but kinda superfluous seeing as it's free...

It does work though and it shouldn't tax the minds of even the most dimwitted to turn it on.

Oh and I FYP :P

My prediction of spam reaching epidemic proportions was woefully optimistic. Now they're hitting existing threads and spamming in much bigger numbers.

Getting to the stage where captcha is no longer going to be effective and admin approval for new accounts is going to be the only solution.

If it keeps increasing at the current rate, mods won't be able to cope with it.

bloody typical - you can't get a mod for bloody ages and then along come 2 at the same time and they are typing each others' eyes out to zap spam and spammers.

There's a bit of speed left in the old boy yet! ;)

Btw, copied from another thread

We can't at the moment Comets. We can ban posters and delete threads only - and edit them sorry.

Cannot delete whole records.

They might have new powers or they might be very angry.

Actually it now means that they are full Administrators. I hope that they know how to handle their power.
