TSG shit happens unfortunately, as long as there is not any physical abuse I am willing to let it pass. If I remember there was a fellow who got thrown into a pond but it was only a few inches deep - Knocked him out cold, now that was not funny and they deserved to get in trouble.

Mitty I was at Columba's in the 70's and we were not backwards at acting the bollocks but two rules always applied. 1. you kept in in-house and on school grounds and 2. you never involved the girls.Break the rules and you got the shit kicked out of you.

Agree with that, girls can do what they want to themselves though. With regards keeping it in-house??? Hmmm, on the fence about this, I think it is acceptable to do it around this time of year, it is a one off and there is a little bit of pushing the boundaries as you will not be returning the next year...

On Wommers' point, there used to be a rag day when the 6th years ran around a bit on their last day in school before graduation. LC came about two weeks after. That day was a regular day for everyone else though.
In my earlier years there'd be supersoakers and eggs and flour and stuff. One year they got onto the school roof. Each year was progressively worse than the last, although there was never any damage done. By my 6th year we were explicitly told that we'd be barred from the graduation ceremony if we so much as showed up in the school for a rag day.

Bit extreme, but things can escalate and damage be done/people hurt.

The girl tied up probably doesn't want to make a complaint. Besides those involved would probably only be cautioned by a juvenile liason officer and not charged.

A feck off, the chest beating going on here was a bit too much to take and I was adding a little bit of realism to the debate. I do not condone bullying and going after the weakest is not fair but pranks in general is part and parcel of growing up, I think everyone needs to grow a set.

Some days were bloody funny though, I remember getting into a car with a few Rock lads and doing drive-bys in Mount Anville, was fucking hilarious...

Just a kids game, cant see teenagers playing it though.

Basically all sit in a circle and one of them goes round tapping kids on the head saying duck until they tap one on the head and say goose, then chase ensues...

It gets called loads of different things e.g. en francais i believe they do tomate, tomate, soupe

Great prank. Bravo.

I remember that happened in our school, a few lads a couple of years ahead of us got a lad who was a year ahead of us, and drove him up to Mount Anville, stripped him to his boxers and tied him up on their front gate, and then legged it to hide and watch.

The lad who got tied up was a bit of a buzzer however, and loved the attention when all the birds came out from school. So much so, that he said fuck it, whipped his lad out and started doing a "helicopter" at all the Mounties, laughing his hole off the whole time, until one of the male teachers came up and covered him with a jacket.

The lads who did it got suspended, but it was absolutely hilarious when we heard about this back in school.

Also, in Muckross, a girl I know got tied up by the year ahead, got catfood smeared all over her, and all sorts of other stuff and got paraded through Herbert Park in a wagon. She was naaaay happy.

Herbert Park was a focking warzone one year, cars driving around with crates of eggs, birds running all over the place, lads getting thrown in ponds - Teachers screaming themselves hoarse

So much craic. Absolutely legging it getting chased by birds with eggs and water bombs (they were always shite at throwing though), then doing retaliatory drive-bys through their school. Good times, I miss school.

WTF? Who does that shit.

A lad getting trussed and dumped in a birds' school and then laughing it off and swinging his mickey about is far cry from a girl being dumped in a guys' school though.

18 year old girls, school uniforms and bondage? Rule one for fucks sake!!!

Realistically, if you did this to one of your friends, it's a laugh, a harmless prank.
But since it's clear they did this to the unpopular girl in the class, abandoned her tied up in an all boys school and it obviously obviously was NOT done in the spirit of fun, I'd see it more like a form of hardcore bullying.

Also, shit like this (maybe not as extreme) happens all the time in scobie schools, but it's never reported because no one is shocked when povs behave like povs

I always think that difference between privileged schools and poverty stricken institutions is that if a fight breaks it is broken up when things look to get out of hand. Oh and it is always one on one.

I suggest a radical rescheduling of the school year so that it ends halfway through January. That'd put an end to all these disgraceful antics.

Imagine that, the Herald being the ones making a deal of what school they went to.

I may know a couple of lads who were involved, but I've no idea to what extent.

The Trinity Ski trip is absolute carnage every year. Got a bit out of hand that year obviously, some stuff what not cool. The lads acting like complete wankers afterwards doesn't help.
I've been on small college trips to London where 40 pissed students were loose in a hostel, can't begin to imagine what it's like when there are hundreds. My cousin and some of her friends went on a ski holiday that year to the same resort as the Trinity trip. Lots of people did; even though they weren't on the actual DU Snow Sports Club trip, they took part in the partying.
College students drink too much and act the shit; it's like an axiom of nature.

The Herald is still only fit for wiping your arse with though.

It's not that they even have to be your mates, it's just that they have to be popular and game for a laugh, which btw, your one who got the catfood put on her was.

It's not cool doing it to the nerds, because they might freak out and go all weird like they're prone to do.

I managed to get a rep for being the kid that freaked out for the first few years in school.

Boxy - the point I'd make is that it is NOT a fine line. It's a blindingly obvious one - or it should be to anyone even remotely sentient.

Personally - the students involved have displayed or all to see that they lack the maturity to be allowed out of the school system, so keep them in it.

Kiss the 2012 LC goodbye and their parents better scramble their arses & chequebooks around Dublin to find a suitable establishment in which they can repeat their final year.

would you fuck off...do you think the teachers/parents in the Phoebe Prince case should sufficient preciousness ? Her dad was on the late, late (i know, i know) a while back together with some other kid that had to move town due to bullying ; i think that if my kid was involved in either instigating or being on the receiving end of this I would lose the plot.

Like a lot of kids her age, Phoebe Prince was a swan, always beautiful and sometimes awkward.

Last fall, she moved from Ireland into western Massachusetts, a new town, a new high school, a new country, a new culture. She was 15, when all that matters is being liked and wearing the right clothes and just fitting in.

She was a freshman and she had a brief fling with a senior, a football player, and for this she became the target of the Mean Girls, who decided then and there that Phoebe didn’t know her place and that Phoebe would pay.

Kids can be mean, but the Mean Girls took it to another level, according to students and parents. They followed Phoebe around, calling her a slut. When they wanted to be more specific, they called her an Irish slut.

The name-calling, the stalking, the intimidation was relentless.

Ten days ago, Phoebe was walking home from school when one of the Mean Girls drove by in a car. An insult and an energy drink can came flying out the car window in Phoebe’s direction.

Phoebe kept walking, past the abuse, past the can, past the white picket fence, into her house. Then she walked into a closet and hanged herself. Her 12-year-old sister found her.

You would think this would give the bullies who hounded Phoebe some pause. Instead, they went on Facebook and mocked her in death.

They told State Police detectives they did nothing wrong, had nothing to do with Phoebe killing herself.

And then they went right back to school and started badmouthing Phoebe.

They had a dance, a cotillion, at the Log Cabin in Holyoke two days after Phoebe’s sister found her in the closet, and some who were there say one of the Mean Girls bragged about how she played dumb with the detectives who questioned her.

Last week, one of the Springfield TV stations sent a crew to South Hadley High to talk to the kids.

One girl was interviewed on camera, and she said what was common knowledge: that bullies were stalking the corridors of South Hadley High.

As soon as the TV crew was out of sight, one of the Mean Girls came up and slammed the girl who had been interviewed against a locker and punched her in the head.

The Mean Girls are pretty, and popular, and play sports.

So far, they appear to be untouchable, too.

South Hadley is a nice, comfortable middle-class suburb that hugs the Connecticut River nearby and a certain attitude.

“Things like this aren’t supposed to happen in South Hadley,’’ said Darby O’Brien, a high school parent, wondering why the bullies who tormented Phoebe are still in school. “And so instead of confronting the evil among us, the reality that there are bullies roaming the corridors at South Hadley High, people are blaming the victim, looking for excuses why a 15-year-old girl would do this. People are in denial.’’

School officials say there are three investigations going on. They say these things take time.

That doesn’t explain why the Mean Girls who tortured Phoebe remain in school, defiant, unscathed.

“What kind of message does this send to the good kids?’’ O’Brien asked. “How many kids haven’t come forward to tell what they know because they see the bullies walking around untouched?’’

They were supposed to hold a big meeting on Tuesday to talk about all this, but now that’s off for a couple of weeks.

O’Brien is thinking about going to that meeting and suggesting that they have the kids who bullied Phoebe look at the autopsy photos.

“Let them see what a kid who hung herself looks like,’’ he said.

Last week, Phoebe was supposed to visit Ireland, where she grew up, and she was excited because she was going to see her father for the first time in months.

She did end up going back to Ireland after all, and when her father saw her she was in a casket.

Phoebe’s family decided to bury her in County Clare. They wanted an ocean between her and the people who hounded her to the grave

It's one prank ffs. It's not as if they're tying her up in different schools every day. Wind your neck in you shrill queen.

That's the nail on the head really. Fine-ish line between a good old prank and bad old bullying

Nothing wrong with a bit of targeted bullying to toughen up the softies, nerds and social misfits, and prepare them for life in the real world.

If PR was a school guys like Hellraiser, Fogerty, ANDy etc would have been relentlessly and ruthlessly bullied to the point of tears day after day, week after week, year after year until they learned to fit in with the mainstream. It would have done them a world of good.

I remember I was on the 46A around this time of year, heading into Donnybrook, think I was off for the weekend from Clongowes and heading into the Institute. Anyway there were a few Muckross chicks that I knew vaguely and they came down to chat to me, obviously being a top dog I was used to the attention. One of the better looking Muckross birds suggested I sack off my grind class (Classical Studies  ) and go with them to the park - I didn't need a second invitation and said sure thing. We stopped off outside where Donnybrook Fair is and I was Don Juan with 2 birds on either arm, classic Mitty. We rounded the corner and I was faced with about 15 chicks armed with eggs, flour and milk - I was properly stitched up by those little hussies. Apparently I had lined one of their mates mouths with my own special Odlums brew outside Old Belvo and then had blanked her for the rest of the night...See her around the odd time, she's married now with two kids I think, still make 'blowie' gestures at her in the car...

Classy. What age are you?
