Quite a fan it seems.

Quote:
Yauch’s death provoked such a reaction because his band brought rap to the masses, and because he was so evidently spending his life trying to improve the world. When he changed my own life, though, it was 1987 and I had scammed my way to the front row of a Beasties gig in Brighton, supporting Run DMC. I screamed my head off (I was 16); I could rap their entire record, start to finish, and Run DMC’s as well. That gig didn’t have much feminism. It had topless girls in cages and a giant inflatable penis. But on the other hand, the Beastie Boys were on fire. I left the hall dazed, and when the lights went up, the only thought in my head was: ‘I want in.’

That gig led to my fascination with music, and the music business, that changed how I spent my twenties; led to MTV and record companies, tour buses and backstage passes, aftershows and crew drinks at 2 a.m. It led to a young life in music that was blissfully happy for more than ten years. At the Hall of Fame, in the non-political half of my life, where my husband is a legendary manager, I got to meet two of the Beastie Boys at long last, and pay my respects. I never met Yauch. But when I read about his death that night I cried. Many thousands of others did too.

They remain one of the best live acts I have ever seen and I wouldn't be a big fan of their music to listen to in general.

I'm not a perfume expert. Possibly "Obsession". But it could be moth balls.

I was thinking of Mary Archer probably. I used to drive past her home most days a week. (And I've been a guest, as you would expect.)

My neighbour, in an earlier life, was his amanuensis.

Fiscal prudence with a hint of anti-immigration.

She used to correct a lot of script, I understand. Jeffrey Archer used to pace up and down the conservatory dictating.

Araucaria, possibly the best crossword compiler, ever, produced this gem.

Poetical scene has surprisingly chaste Lord Archer vegetating (3, 3, 8, 12)

I lived near the great crypto man in Huntingdonshire.

Globus, would it be possible to get a pair of Louise’s used panties tonight? I will pay the postage and also monetarily compensate you for your time and effort.

She's not here today. As she is a bit "Conservative", I suspect some difficulty.

I bumped into her a few weeks back when attending a select committee hearing at the HoC. She is surprisingly small, but I definitely would.

Globus I am surprised. I don't think there are many who would find the diminutive schools minister hotter than Mensch! Still, each to their own I suppose.

Nice article.

Has led to some highly enjoyable wiki'ing.

Quote:
Critical response

Sure, Paul's Boutique is littered with bullshit tough-guy bravado, but it's clever and hilarious bullshit: Who can be put off by claims like "I got more hits than Sadaharu Oh" and "I got more suits than Jacoby and Myers"?
—Rolling Stone, August 10, 1989

Upon initial release, Paul's Boutique was alienated commercially for its experimental and dense sampling and lyricism, in contrast to the Beastie Boys's previous album, Licensed to Ill.[11] Music critic David Handelman called the record a "rap opera."[10] While major music publications such as Rolling Stone favored the album's unique name-dropping lyrics and the album peaked at #14 on the Pop Albums chart, Paul's Boutique did not equal its predecessor's commercial success with hip hop fans, as it only peaked at #24 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart.[24] The album received a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America on September 22 of its release year.[2] Paul's Boutique would go on to sell over 2 million copies by 1999.[2] In retrospect, the album has also gone on to receive much critical acclaim and has been recognized as a landmark album in hip-hop. In a review of the album for Allmusic, contributor Stephen Thomas Erlewine summed the initial reaction to Paul's Boutique and praised the density that the album contains:

Musically, few hip-hop records have ever been so rich; it's not just the recontextulations of familiar music via samples, it's the flow of each song and the album as a whole, culminating in the widescreen suite that closes the record. Lyrically, the Beasties have never been better — not just because their jokes are razor-sharp, but because they construct full-bodied narratives and evocative portraits of characters and places. Few pop records offer this much to savor, and if Paul's Boutique only made a modest impact upon its initial release, over time its influence could be heard through pop and rap, yet no matter how its influence was felt, it stands alone as a record of stunning vision, maturity, and accomplishment.[11]
—Stephen Thomas Erlewine

I was being referring to height only. As you probably know, Louise is my MP and lives a short distance away.

Yet to meet her new husband though. That may happen at our Jubilee celebrations, which are proving to be a pain in the botty at the moment.

I'm doing the project. I wish I had not volunteered.

420 leaflets personally to deliver this weekend. Plus securing the jugglers act, and the food and the......... oh sod it. G&T coming up.
